Most pages read in a month this year! I really need to read more Ann Patchett, her books are always so lovely. #storygraph #booksky

There is an awful lot going on in this story, but I enjoyed the snapshot of the Great Depression experience that I hadn’t read much about: women and girls without men in their lives to depend on. A long read but it flowed well. #booksky #calamityclub

What’s #PrideMonth if you don’t listen to some pseudo lesbian pulp? That much less gay, that’s what. This was a fun read with a morally grey enigmatic character not looking for redemption, but somehow becoming more likable as you read. #booksky

A long day celebrating Pride followed by an early night in bed with my next #PrideMonth read. Love Andrew Joseph White, but it’s definitely the opposite feeling of a Pride Parade. A reminder to celebrate when we can and keep fighting-always. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

A quick word or two:

This Friday, May 1st, is International Workers' Day (aka May Day), and in solidarity with workers local and worldwide, we will be closed. This is a longstanding tradition at the store and a reflection of our core values as a store.

The modern economy, it seems, is all about convenience. Everything needs to be fast-immediate, if possible. This speed speaks to the sense that commerce is both inevitable and necessary. The customer is not simply always right, says the economy, they are everyone all the time. Or, perhaps, not quite everyone. Too often lost in all this is the role of the worker, whose labor becomes the means of convenience for others.

The worker, whose speed is human, is expected to work until the demand is met. But because the demand never ends, the job is never done. The worker, in effect, is denied an active role as a worker-you do that on your own time, which alas is rarely yours, says the economy. The worker, who has a name, is in effect reduced to their work, whose value is determined by someone else whose name has a little more value.

On May 1st, workers worldwide say No, and we collectively demand a different way of doing business.

Congratulations to Taylor Swift on her numerous songwriting acknowledgments this year. I was once told by a professor that people who learn to write from reading have a unique relationship with language. Her relationship to literature speaks most loudly to me on this album #ttpd #swiftie

Always down for a new vampire take, but this was pretty meh. Started out promising but then felt really drawn out for a shortish novel. The secondary characters were all underdeveloped and the main character was a bit lost in the plot. #Booksky #ListeningIsReadingToo
