At college, students with disabilities encounter a whole different system for accommodations. Students must play an active\ role in that process and some will find that some of the accommodations they relied on in high school aren't available to them.  I talked to Undivided about it: bit.ly/UIOA
Quote from Undivided article: "What's really important to know is, students have to initiate this process,' says Hamblet. 'We do not go to the freshman dorms and knock on all the doors and say, 'Hey, kiddo, do you have a learning disability? You want to come register with us?' It is up to the student to seek out accommodations and follow through on completing the process to access them." Is your college student with a disability struggling? I've got advice for those considering leaving before the term is over. Mark McConville and Lisa Damour discussed whether parents should push students to return. Listen to the podcast on your favorite app.  Read my post: bit.ly/LDAdSS24
Episode 290 of the podcast is "How to Prevent Failure to Launch." Pictured is Mark McConville, a middle aged white man with short hair and glasses. The Ask Lisa logo shows Damour, a middle aged white woman with short blond hair wearing a checked brown blazer and glasses. Her head rests on her hand and she looks into the distance.“...Be aware that once students start classes at college, they have created a record.* This likely will include their grade if they stay in the class, or a different designation, depending on what happens when they leave a class before it’s over. (Policies vary.) If they decide to stay on at that college or transfer, that record likely will follow them.” Read more on Substack.Read "Should your struggling student with a disability take a break from college? on Substack. I read dozens of reports every year in my work for a college's DS office. In my opinion, reports *should* contain certain basic elements for the fee that families are paying, but my experience is that many don't.  Find out what should be in *any* report you pay for: bit.ly/LDBlog113x

When you pay for an evaluation for your student's possible learning disability and/or ADHD, you expect an excellent report. Unfortunately, you can't always count on this. I discuss how a report I read at work fell short so that you know what to look for: bit.ly/LDAdSS3  #EduSky
But here’s the rub…This report doesn’t meet the requirements of the college the student will attend. I think it’s likely the family (understandably) wasn’t aware of the differences in documentation requirements the student might eventually encounter in college. Substack post title is "Psychologists Behaving Badly...or what to make sure you get if you pay for a learning disability or ADHD evaluation." Image of man's hands writing on a clipboard.
