Great to see this data that supports what many are seeing locally. SAS doctors should not be held back when their contract clearly structures progression. Trusts are missing a trick with workforce resourcing by not promoting autonomous doctors to Specialist roles #SASbyChoice #NHS #medicine

Happy #SASweek25 to all who celebrate. Remember, a SAS doctor is for life, not just SAS week. #SASsix
SAS six infographic, featuring the six asks to make a SAS career a viable alternative.

Every early career SAS doctor should have access to an educational supervisor.

All SAS doctors should have equity of access to professional development opportunities relevant to their stage of career.

All specialty doctors who meet the required capabilities should have the opportunity to become specialists.

Senior SAS doctors should be offered the opportunity to be educators at every level on a par with consultants e.g. educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, directors of medical education.

All extended roles in leadership and management should be open to all substantive medical staff that is, consultants and appropriately experienced SAS doctors.

All LEDs employed for more than two years within one NHS employer should be offered the opportunity to transfer to the appropriate SAS contract.

Excellently put. SAS and locally-employed anaesthetists are the most rapidly rising contributors for provision of anaesthesia, and our careers should progress to autonomy. This IS the workforce solution you are looking for, folks.
The Association believes that more should be done to invest in the SAS and LED workforce, which already contributes substantially to anaesthetic service delivery and is often overlooked in the allocation of training and other resources. Developing SAS and LED careers would offer a more sustainable, useful and potentially more cost-effective option. The review may consider this particular point outside its remit, but we suggest it is worthy of highlighting.

Consultants and some SAS doctors are autonomous providers of anaesthesia and require no supervision. The review should not lose sight of the value of training resident, SAS and LED doctors to become autonomous providers of high-quality anaesthesia.
