Yes I definitely think it’s worth 90% of my mental energy as a teacher to ponder how to help students understand how to use this very complex and societally important tool

was the joy of my life to write about my queen diane lane in UNFAITHFUL and UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN for @brightwalldarkroom.com. two movies about what it’s like to be a woman in your late 30s, the impulse to tear it all down, and the joy of building it back up instead 🖤

Two Diane Lanes at Midlife: Unfaithful & Under the Tuscan Sun
I am soon to be 38: the age when women disappear from movies. But once upon a time they did make movies about us, and they starred Diane Lane.

Seconds on Seconds: Resurrection in Face and Film
If Seconds (1966) came out today, with its horror lens firmly trained on themes of extreme plastic surgery, dread of aging, and get-happy-quick schemes, it would likely have found a ready A24 audience...

Okay I guess I’m just a Big Sleep poster now (though next week I’ll be moving on to Double Indemnity) but my class is having its final discussion about the book tomorrow & man the second to last paragraph is just so fucking fantastic. Pardon my almost-correct Hamlet annotations.

Outside the bright gardens had a haunted look, as though small wild eyes were watching me from behind the bushes, as though the sunshine itself had a mysterious something in its light. I got into my car and drove off down the hill.

What did it matter where you lay once you were dead?
In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you greet were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were
the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big
sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell Me, I was part of the nastiness now. Far more a part of it than Rusty Regan was. But the old man didn't have to be. He could lie quiet in his canopied bed
with his bloodless hands folded on the sheet, waiting.

I think the way some of these older scenes telegraph the horniness without dumb jokes or crassness & with erotic sincerity/commitment is shocking? Even today?

Yes! Also, I think it's lovely to model falling in love with a text for students. A byproduct of the beautiful process of discovering new perspectives and ideas about a particular book or film or poem!

I love sharing the rec letters I wrote with students who ask about them. I still remember when my history teacher shared his rec with me, and the confidence it gave me in myself to see that someone else believed in me at that moment.

Also I can't help but think that a human-authored letter is going to shine for that student EVEN MORE if the college admissions staff has read a hundred AI-authored letters in a row ...

it's college rec letter writing season, and I once again am committed to writing all of my letters MYSELF, despite more and more of my colleagues falling to the "this seems like a task for AI" trap. If you love your students, write your own sentences about them!

I need to know if every kid at every school is pantsing each other right now—and if so, what is behind the rise in pantsing cases (a turn to analog mischief and away from online bullying thanks to phone bans??)—or if it’s just my school. Is pantsing back in a major way? Who is on this beat?

today’s teaching tip is: sometimes you need to read the room, hit pause, cancel the reading homework, let kids who are behind catch up, let kids who are dwelling in drafts just dwell, and help everyone celebrate something they’ve done well recently

The FINAL arc of BRIAR hit stands this last Wednesday, wrapping up our years-long fantasy epic. I am so proud of this book, how so unabashedly queer it is, and how we ended it. It became an anthem for folks that still show up in cosplay at cons. Grab the final chapter. I’ll miss these misfits.

I am so there. And not just creative writing, but personal narrative writing, or anything that asks students to connect with themselves and with voice. Instead of doing standard close reading paragraphs on Shakespeare, I’ve been having my 10th graders write him letters …
