sometimes you have to just go read and think about Wallace Stevens’ “Anecdote of the Jar” for the 100th time
Anecdote of the Jar
BY WALLACE STEVENS

I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.
It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.

Okay I guess I’m just a Big Sleep poster now (though next week I’ll be moving on to Double Indemnity) but my class is having its final discussion about the book tomorrow & man the second to last paragraph is just so fucking fantastic. Pardon my almost-correct Hamlet annotations.

Outside the bright gardens had a haunted look, as though small wild eyes were watching me from behind the bushes, as though the sunshine itself had a mysterious something in its light. I got into my car and drove off down the hill.

What did it matter where you lay once you were dead?
In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you greet were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were
the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big
sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell Me, I was part of the nastiness now. Far more a part of it than Rusty Regan was. But the old man didn't have to be. He could lie quiet in his canopied bed
with his bloodless hands folded on the sheet, waiting.

This is a motherfucking paragraph
THE BIG SLEEP
THREE
This room was too big, the ceiling was too high, the doors were too tall, and the white carpet that went from wall to wall looked like a fresh fall of snow at Lake Arrowhead.
There were full-length mirrors and crystal doodads all over the place. The ivory furniture had chromium on it, and the enormous ivory drapes lay tumbled on the white carpet a yard from the windows. The white made the ivory look dirty and the ivory made the white look bled out. The windows stared towards the darkening foothills.
It was going to rain soon. There was pressure in the air already.
I sat down on the edge of a deep soft chair and looked at Mrs. Regan. She was worth a stare. She was trouble.
She was stretched out on a modernistic chaise-longue

We finished reading our first book in my class (in two weeks! I pushed them! kids can read full books quickly!) so now we're watching our first movie & I'm spending WAY too much time coming up with alliterative tips for film viewing.
How To Watch A Film

We have talked about this but … watching a film should be a single-screen experience. No laptop, no phone (if you’re at home). Allow yourself to become absorbed by just one screen.

It’s normal to want to hear all the dialogue, and I know that many of you are used to having subtitles on so that you feel confident you’re catching every word. However, it’s really easy, when subtitles are on, to pay the most attention to the words on the screen and track the plot while losing track of more artistic aspects of the film: the actors’ facial expressions, the camera movements, the lighting, the sound design. So: let yourself listen and remember that you’re very capable of understanding the words people say without subtitles.

Focus on framing.
What are you looking at, at what angle, through what perspective, and why? The frame is the director’s key method of showing you what to pay attention to. Are we close in on a main character, the lens forcing us to take in their every blink, every breath? Are we looking at an establishing shot from a distance, helping us locate ourselves in time and space? Are we peering in at the characters from a window, positioning ourselves as voyeurs? Does the shot seem to be from the POV of a particular character? Are there multiple characters in the frame, and if so, how are they positioned in relationship to each other? What did the director choose to locate in the background of the shot, and what information does that give us about the scene?

Pay attention to performance.
How are the actors embodying their characters? This goes beyond just facial expressions and extends to voice, posture, and movement. Think of Alan Ruck’s performance in the car scene in Ferris Bueller, small eruptions of violence from a body that has tried to restrain that violence all film, eyes down, voice furious but still contained, shoulders hunched … there’s a lot going on there, more than just “he was angry at his dad”!

Look at lighting a…

RIP Wendell Berry.
THE DEAD CALF
Dead at the pasture edge, his head is without eyes, becalmed on the grass. There was no escaping the heaviness that came on him, the darkness that rose
nder his belly as though he stoo 1 a black sucking poo
Earth's weight grew in him, and he lay down. As he died a great bird took his eyes.
Where is the horror in it?
Not in him, for he came to it as a shadow into the night.
It was nameless and familiar.
He was fitted to it. In me is where the horror is. In my mind he does not yield. I cannot believe the deep peace that has come to him.
I am afraid that where the light is torn there is a wound.
There is a darkness in the soul that loves the eyes. There is a light in the mind that sees only light and will not enter the darkness.
But I would have a darkness in my mind like the dark the dead calf makes for a time
on the grass where he lies, and will make in the earth as he is carried down.
May all dead things lie down in me and be at peace, as in the ground.

This post reminded me that I wrote a poem in part inspired by D.P.O.
LICHTENBERG SCARRING
When Boris Karloff’s fourth wife
went into labor with his only
daughter he was on set filming Son
of Frankenstein and rushed
to the hospital in
full makeup the pale pale
stitched-on flesh and heavy-
lidded eyes swaying over
the gray but rapidly reddening
form emerging from the
mother just now coming to terms
with the way every love
splits you open with
fear I frequently find myself
lying awake and imagining
all the ways my kids could
die killed in a car crash struck
by a disease too brutal and
invasive for any doctor to
eradicate taken from their
bedrooms at night by an
unseen hand the skull
caved in by the
bat taken down over decades
by the slow yet persistent
erosion of the mind’s will to survive
by chemicals in the brain
you know are there because
you helped encode them
in their tiny strands of
DNA perhaps
when Frankenstein sawwhen Frankenstein saw
his monster wake up
it was not the revulsion of the
unnatural image
that he desired immediately
to stamp out but the
instantaneous understanding
that only through the death
of this thing he had created
could he be free of the
anxiety and responsibility
and unflinching love he had
inflicted on himself
with a single stroke of
electrical discharge perhaps he
yearned to be Giovanni Ribisi
in the X-Files episode
whose ability to absorb and
channel lightning leaves him
not electrified butempty and craving
death a monster with
only himself to
animate in the hospital
room Karloff touches his
wife’s hair tears flow
down the sides of his
caked on face that is also
not his face did the
daughter see her father
as a creature too empathetic
to live successfully
in this world to be able
to smile while lying to her
about how most people
in this world are
good what do we inherit and
what do we
pass on the thirst for
creating something that
scares us and yet when
I think about
my childrens’ faces
of course I want to lie down
in a puddle
in a thunder storm
and welcome the
vaporizing flash

Watching Ida Lupino’s THE HITCH-HIKER last night, I was struck by how we’ve always used racism as a way to indicate evil—“I don’t speak Mexican,” the murderous hitchhiker growls multiple times as they travel through Mexico. When did people lose sight of the evil embedded in that hatred and fear?
The hitchhiker’s shadow bisected by a soon-to-be victim’s car Edmond O’Brien, William Talman, and Frank Lovejoy in a car; Talman’s face is in shadow.
