It's a very funny time to have taken an interest in CEQA, what with everyone being mad about prop 45. But it's such a weird law! Californians effectively said, "We don't trust bureaucracy, so we would like the bureaucratic process to be handled by randos with free time and lawyers. Also, we […]

This isn't an opinion on the House race--I know nothing about Chan--just a conversation I keep having since he's in the news. Plus, Wiener just sticks out like a broken tooth in my brain: a policymaker I'd be heavily aligned otherwise, who apparently thinks you can punish homelessness out of […]

It is wild when people flat-out don't believe me that Scott Wiener is a big supporter of criminalizing poverty. And it does fit really weirdly with his vibe as a politician! He's typically solutions-focused and morally driven, and he'll go out on a limb for groups like trans people and intersex […]

"So really, you can't be a [feminist, environmentalist, Christian, whatever] unless you also subscribe to x viewpoint." 1) Not everything needs to be turned into an in-group/out-group fight. 2) The goal is not to wrangle every opinion into a single mega-ideology. It's actually really healthy […]

@skinnylatte I mean, pretty much all of California tax policy is built to keep cities like Oakland in a perpetual budget crisis. And the two flavors of solution for this problem--ramp up enforcement or commit to constant cleanups--involve a lot of staffing up. It doesn't help that building […]

I have literally never heard someone say, "There are problems with this project, but I think we can iron them out through CEQA process." I have *many* times heard someone say, "If we drag CEQA out long enough, we have a shot at killing this project." If we as California voters want to kill […]

A dark day for human rights.
four frame comic. first frame shows the logo of amnesty international. second frame shows jk rowling, smiling in the dark. third frame shows an empty classroom, with a pride poster almost falling from the wall. fourth frame shows a trans flag flying in the wind. text above all the images reads :
on july 8th, amnesty Inter-
national uk published a report
titled “A Growing Threat: The
Anti-Rights Movement in the UK.”
it listed 117 orgs, including anti-
trans and anti-queer ones
backed by jk rowling.
the backlash was immediate
and brutal : rowling pledged
to cover the fees of anyone
who wished to sue amnesty.
the report was taken down
within 48 hours.
this morning (july 31st), amnesty
fully capitulated and released
an apology to anti-trans orgs,
which, it said, should not have
been "collectively labelled as
anti-rights". rowling
celebrated.
an organisation that
bravely faced fascist regimes
and reported human rights
violations for 65 years has caved
to rowling's power and bigotry.
it's a dark day for human rights.
