I played women's rugby in college. You get tackled, kicked, stepped on. Do you know what my team less safe? Lack of adequate funding, facilities, coaches & trainers. Do you know what would have only made it more awesome? Trans athletes. Trans people belong in sports.

My greatest professional accomplishment of the year: I got my exec & manager teammates saying "point positive," a term from whitewater rafting and kayaking. Meaning: when facing hazards, point people toward where to go/what to do, rather than drawing attention to everything to avoid.

Not every team I played on had out transgender athletes, but when I have had trans teammates, they played the game with the exact same heart, determination, team spirit, and love of the game that my cisgender teammates brought.

Those reasons still matter to me, but now I fight much more because so many people I care for deeply—family members, friends, coworkers—are trans, and so many are rightly afraid of what's already happening and what's coming. Their safety is at risk because a small minority spread hate. (2/3)

I feel like Americans love to analogize sports to business because for many of us, sports was the only time we: 1. worked as a team 2. received constructive criticism and 3. shared a larger mission before being in the labor force. I wish there were more ways for young people to experience these.
