I've mostly really enjoyed my work as an editor, but now the majority of my jobs involve un-AI-ifying AI slop, and it's so disheartening and boring.

Oh, yes. My friend retired from caring for toddlers at about 67, and she said it was just in time because she could no longer carry those 2-year-olds around.

That's exactly how I'm feeling. That's how much longer I have before I retire.

A.I. and corporate lingo are dragging language ynto drugged realmes of vague, airy, plastic nothingnesse: glitz and hyperbole wythout meaning. Language must have fur and clawes, make the floorboardes creake and leave wet dirtye footprintes. Wordes are rayne and fyre and stone. Wielde them. Save us.

I would want to add "aesthetically repugnant"

And now I see the part where I was supposed to introduce myself. Is it okay to do it here? I live in Spokane, WA, and I've been editing for 30 years, for museums, the federal government, publishers, academics, hospitals, businesses--anything nonfiction.

Sometimes the client doesn't want me to eliminate the field. (Is that the same as flatten? I'm not familiar with that term.) As when it's a dissertation proposal. Yup.

Rudy, I find they often screw up too much and just make my job more difficult. And when they're quite good, sometimes they lull me into a false sense of complacency. I also find dealing with the fields annoying.

I just edited a book for Harvard Education Press and they specified that they don't want the locations in there.

I just did these exact same tasks! But perhaps because I charge by the hour, I don't mind it; and I still prefer that people not use citation managers.

Working as the mate on a hand troller in Alaska. Or else playing Gretel for a department store marketing gig. Now I really enjoy one of my jobs: proofreading the historical markers for the state of Wisconsin.

I'm an editor. Working on LLM-generated material takes about a third longer. People might be saving time, but it's not my time.

I used to storm around saying "I don't know how people can stand him!" and then I had a dream that I was in his presence and I felt the charisma. Still don't like him, but it was undeniable, and now I get it.
