Soup Season Week 3. Years ago my grandma would bring me to a seniors cafe that had different daily soups on the menu. Their beet borscht with dill was so good! I thought I would try to recreate it & it turned out better than I remember. Do you have a soup that brings memories of a time or place?
"Soup Season Week 3 Vegan Dill Beet Borscht"Bowl of soup, plate with a biscuit, & a glass of water on a countertop next to the side of a fridge.

It's soup season! We moved the first week of Autumn so I don't have a picture of the Minestrone but here's the corn chowder from last week. I love how versatile & affordable soup is. Any suggestions on what kind I should make next? 🍲

It's so important we keep talking & learning about this pervasive issue in our society. There's lots to learn about accountability, healing & prevention but most of the discussions focus on the people & institutions directly involved. Here's what I've felt has been missing from the conversation.

Canada's AI strategy announcement ignores people's concerns around the environmental impacts, the societal issues & inequalities that come with this emerging technology. Part 2/2
Sovereignty seems more propaganda than reality in Canada's AI strategy considering: how connected Canadian AI companies currently are with US companies, the Sovereignty Technology Alliance purpose of attracting foreign investment, & Canada's defense deal with Palantir announced just this week. The claim to be strengthening protections of Canadians personal data is also a bit hard to believe considering bill C-22 would force the collection of Canadian's personal data on every digital service & device we use.  There's concerns of Canadian's personal data being shared with foreign countries not only through bill C-22 & the devices & digital services we use being largely foreign owned (like Meta, Google, X & Apple) but also Canada's AI partnerships with US companies, & alliances like the The Five Eyes (intelligence-sharing alliance between US, UK, Canada, Australia, & New Zealand). The risks to personal data are especially concerning considering the rise of surveillance, & violations of human rights & international law. Canadians deserve to know how the government intends to protect personal data, & when it will be collected or shared.

Canada's AI strategy announcement ignores people's concerns around the environmental impacts, the societal issues & inequalities that come with this emerging technology. Part 1/2
This strategy focuses on Canada getting a piece of the profit, not on how this is/will affect the people this government is supposed to serve. There's a focus on investment & implementation of AI but no explanation for the metrics used to determine which products are invested in, or plans to track their effectiveness.
While there's some training & upskilling plans there's no measures preventing mass layoffs or plans to have social safety nets in place for ppl affected. The AI literacy initiative focuses on post-secondary education while generative AI is already a daily part of most people's lives, & we urgently need AI Literacy & long overdue Media Literacy for all ages. It should be woven into every level of education (age appropriately), & provided free & accessible to adults. We are already seeing the harmful effects of not having a public that knows how to think critically when presented with information, understand how to discern what is accurate from what is fabricated, enhanced or altered, or how to navigate emerging technologies responsibly.Canadians are already inundated with AI generated videos & images, & have access to tools to create them so AI transparency is urgently needed. I hope the government will clarify & expand on their plan for transparency with details of the regulations, including a timeline for implementation &  plans for potential noncompliance by media companies, or push back against regulations by the US during trade negotiations (as we've seen in the past).

Picture from @motherwoundproject on FB If we can't talk about impact we can't learn to treat each other better or repair harm. If we force differences or struggle to be hidden with false positivity & conformity we can't really know each other, making us feel alone even when we're together.

Purple background with black text that says "Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew's policy of temporary incarceration & Premier David Eby's expansion of involuntary "care" despite push back from medical, mental health & addiction professionals, the civil liberties association, & public policy professionals, scares me. It shows a lack of understanding of the various causes of public outbursts & an
unwillingness to address systemic issues, but instead focuses on removing
people struggling from sight."Purple background with black text that says "People supporting these measures also show a lack of consideration of how we would want to be treated if it were us or a loved one in that situation. Drug use is not the only reason someone might be struggling loudly in public, there's also mental illnesses like schizophrenia or dementia, ptsd, grief, dehydration, experiencing pain ect. Different reasons require different supports."Purple background with black text that says "Interactions with police can add to distress, & with racialized, disabled, & unhoused ppl interactions with police are too often deadly. Instead of arrests & incarceration or death, we need unarmed medical professionals who can assess the situation & the individuals needs, help them get home, to a hospital, to voluntary spaces they can calm down in, or simply stay where they are with them until they are okay. Then offer follow up supports depending on the issue."Purple background with black text that says "That's what I would want if it were me or a loved one in that situation. All people deserve health & safety. I hope that Canada's premiers stop risking the health & safety of people when they're at their most vulnerable just because it's inconvenient or uncomfortable to witness. We need leaders who will lead by example with consideration for others, & not cater to hate, fear, bigotry, or stigma."

Happy Love Day 💚
Black text on abstract background reads "Building community is a process, especially when many of us grow up being taught that relationships are divided into family, friends & partners, & that marriage is the ultimate goal. But we're learning that friendships can be life long bonds, can be familial, romantic or sexual. Relationships of all kinds can change, grow deeper or distant, end or begin again. Love is not a zero sum game. We benefit from multiple meaningful connections."Black text on abstract background reads "Our connections go beyond our close relationships. We interact with & impact so many people throughout our lifetime. Our community is our relationships & where we live, but also the lives we impact throughout the world. We can strengthen our connections & have a more positive impact on each other by learning to be accountable to one another. To build a world where we grow together & no one feels alone."

Seems timely to reshare some nuances about processed foods.
White text on black background that says "There's nuance to processed foods:
-Processing foods is a way to add nutrients (like high fiber bread)
-Processed foods are more accessible for people with dietary restrictions, disabilities or limited time (like frozen vegetables)
-Processed foods can help address animal abuse by providing alternatives to animal products (like oat milk)
-Processed foods can contain ingredients in amounts that are hard for the body to digest & that can harm health if ingested too consistently (like soda) Instead of making people fearful of all processed foods we need improved regulations & enforcement on food quality, accurate nutritional education, & to address barriers to food security"

Wrote a bit about my experience this morning in response to a friend sharing a post about how things are getting worse & will continue to get worse before they get better.
Black background with white text that reads "What keeps me going in this time is seeing that even as things get worse, things can also get better. People responding to financial pressure & environmental disasters with community building & stewardship.Responding to increased danger, to people next door or across oceans, with increasing connections & methods to help protect each other. Finally understanding that we can't reform systems of harm, & calling for abolition, & new systems that improve quality of life for all."Black background with white text that reads "Humans are capable of horrific things & dismantling systems & patterns of harm is generations long work that lives depend on. BUT humans are also capable of incredible things, & the work of building new systems & reclaiming reciprocal ways of being honors the work of our ancestors while building better lives for our children. When the work feels heavy: focus on the steps we're taking forward & how we support each other through it. When the work feels light: focus on what still needs dismantling, & who needs help."

#CanadaPoli #Canada #CostOfLiving
White text on black background that reads "There's a growing awareness of the divide between neoliberal government's attempts to lower spending by selling off essential public services (like transit, electricity, healthcare, postal service ect.) to private companies, & citizens needing essential public services adequately funded to maintain quality & accessibility of those services. While there are countries who enjoy relatively stable prices & a growing job market from state ownership of essential public services & new projects, Canada continues to see costs increase for citizens, & more demand for subsidies & migrant workers from private companies. At what point will the Canadian government fundamentally change policy or if that is even possible within the context of the current Canada- US relationship remains to be seen."

Colorful abstract circles background with a post by @satrayreads that says "I really resonate with how Ruth Wilson Gilmore talks about abolition. She says that abolition is a presence. It's not just the absence of policing and imprisonment and surveillance. It's also, and maybe more importantly, the presence of life affirming institutions and social relations rooted in real care. Ruth Wilson Gilmore also says that abolition doesn't tell us what we have to do but orients us in our struggle. We know what we are working toward by how we get there will require all of us putting our heads together, imagining alternatives to the death-dealing institutions we currently have, and being better to each other."Colorful abstract circles background with a post by @kimberlyyyreads that says "Just saying ACAB to me has always been the defunding and abolishing of not just police but military and ICE. @actioncanadashr.bsky.social Instagram While some leaders push for increased police powers and tough-on-crime laws, we know that true safety comes from preventing harm. We can increase commmunity safety by ensuring everyone has access to affordable housing, education, healthcare and decent work.
A pie chart split into 3 pieces describing what people think violence prevention looks like. The smallest pie piece is crisis lines & the medium sized piece is safety shelters, & the largest piece is police. This is important to learn about now as we see, from politicians across the political spectrum in Canada, bail reform policy that would put people more at risk of losing rental housing, job, custody of their children & pets, access to medical treatments, before even being convicted of a crime.

Myth vs Fact Does more police = less crime? Not exactly. A major UK study found that the number of officers had little effect on crime rates. What matters more? How police are trained How they're deployed Community trust Support staff It's time to shift the conversation from "how many" to how well.
