in 'rule of experts' mitchell does an interesting thing where he's doing ANT but then uses marx as a theorist of nonhuman agency

Edwards (2003) 'Infrastructure and Modernity: Force, Time, and Social Organization in the History of Sociotechnical Systems'. Misa's and Brey's chapters in the same volume are also in conversation w the same issues of scale that Misa first raises in 1988 and then again in 1994

you clearly know the literature well, i'd be happy to share my diss when it's closer to a complete draft

definitely agree the taboo is on (a certain type of) marxism! one of my primary aims is articulating a more capacious marxism in communication and media studies, which i think principally involves rethinking TD because of all the issues raised here

misa eg begins from a rejection of TD and consistently warns against abstraction and "macro" perspectives whereas much more leeway is given to the "micro" scale and social shaping of tech, which needs only to be supplemented rather than rejected. edwards is better imo by allowing for contradiction

sure we can call it a debate instead but this is a relatively very small number of texts and the debate is mostly onesided—most scholars thinking it's long settled. even if it's weakening the taboo still structures the fields, as is evident by the frequency with which people preemptively ward off TD

yeah there is some reconciliation but i'm not super convinced by pinch's claim there that they were always already doing it the whole time. the materiality / nonhuman agency issue is also complicated for me by debates abt materialism within marxism. mitchell handles this interestingly, i think

ANT is a funny one insofar as latour is foundational to social constructionisms and then quickly begins admitting nonhuman agencies that others reject, but it still has the issues well documented by marxist critiques

definitely eliding some differences btwn social constructionists but SCOT rejects nonhuman agency, co-construction is constitutively biased against the tech shaping of soc, and these influence eg feenberg’s “democratic rationalization” which overestimates human agency bc of the taboo on TD imo

i see a nested structure: the taboo on TD is foundational to history and philosophy of technology and marxists within these fields reinforce it by transposing the fallacy to orthodox and soviet marxists, altho there are some exceptions and recent challenges

In the JHI Blog's ongoing forum, D. W. Kamish explores the origins of the "taboo" on technological determinism, namely in reductive attacks on Soviet Marxists, and calls for its end.
