David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 26/11/2024I don’t think Liz Cheney etc have committed any acts that need pardoning; if Biden issues pardons preemptively I think Trump will seize on it as an admission of guilt, vindication of further future abuses. My faith is the justice system isn’t absolute; we need to uphold and sustain it. 020 2
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Sentencing is up to the judge, and is currently scheduled to be in a week or so (well before the next term). Can’t say if prison will be included or not (tho don’t think it should); but that should be left to the judge/court, IMO. Joe should honor his pledge not to interfere. 110 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 25/11/2024Trump’s other indictments are much more serious, stronger direct evidence & application of law. imo WERE they to go to/thru trial I would expect a guilty verdict and serious penalties, including some form of prison. He wouldn’t be a 1st time criminal offender after the NY case. 000 0
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 24/11/2024I don’t think the crimes Trump has been convicted of (given they’re nonviolent, a 1st time offender) warrant prison (same as Hunter), but I do think he should be sentenced, even if delayed until after his term. 000 0
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 22/11/2024The point is he’s been convicted of a crime, plead guilty, regardless of how many people may commit it daily (curious what your source is on millions/day). If your principles include that no one should be above the law, and a president should honor his word, interceding now is against them. 000 0
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 20/11/2024There’s still the Geneva Convention, even during war. I dunno, in those militaristic terms I guess I’m not sure what the strategic victory of pardoning Hunter would be- give up our principles… for what advantage exactly? 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024The sentencing is up to the judge and is scheduled for December (before Trump takes office). Expected sentence would be probation given the charges and first time offender status, but ultimately up to the judge/court. 110 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Sometimes putting your child first means letting them accept the consequences of their actions, especially if they’re a middle-aged adult. My hypothetical adult child’s hypothetical stepdad, Neil, agrees (he’s a real mensch, my hypothetical ex-wife Judy hit the jackpot when she found Neil). 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024I think upholding the rule of law, particularly when it is under assault, supersedes individual concerns of reputation; would hope my hypothetical child, who committed and plead guilty to the crimes in question, would agree. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024It would have to be the one who committed, pled guilty to the crimes for which the sentencing would occur, no? 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Had I pledged not to interfere and let the courts decide, I would like to think I would keep that pledge. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024In this scenario, did any of my children commit and plead guilty to tax & gun form fraud, for which the expected typical sentence would be probation for a first-time offender? By sacrifice, do you mean let the courts decide? 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Losing the election shouldn’t = losing out principles or rule of law. At that point we’d just be trying to out-Trump Trump. I think Joe needs to hold to his pledge not to interfere in Hunter’s case. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Yes, and it seems it wasn’t really fleshed out or mutually understood between Hunter’s team and the prosecutors so fell apart. I’d have no prob had it held, and hope sentencing to be similar outcome (probation, seems to be the precedent) as the plea deal would’ve provided. 000 0
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Important to provide a moral alternative to Trump, imo. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024They are, and I can’t fathom (but nonetheless empathize with), all the pressure and vitriol Hunter has been under these years- but he has plead guilty to crimes it’s evident he committed, and Joe has pledged not to interfere. And I think it’s important Joe not break his pledge. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024None taken, appreciate the discourse. IMO, our principles and laws are what we’re fighting to preserve, if we abandon those, we’ve already lost; then we’re just trying to out-Trump Trump. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024-but they shouldn’t be above the law. I don’t think we need take any cues from Trump, and I don’t think Joe should break his pledge not to interfere in his son’s case. 000 0
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Absolutely your prerogative; apologies if I was mansplaining, but would appreciate any corrections if you feel I’m off-base here. 010 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024While I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with those analogies, my point is that he did ultimately plead guilty, and his father has (rightly, IMO) pledged not to interfere with his son’s case. I think Joe should keep his pledge, and I expect/hope Hunter’s sentencing to be lenient, probationary. 210 2
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024I disagree, not charging Trump would be indefensible given how much evidence his investigations produced (ie, bathroom full of docs he lied about returning, etc), and how many of those indicted crimes were against the American people (seeking to deprive us our right to vote, etc). 000 0
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024I don’t know that I’d say it was the GOP that interfered with it, or that’s what sunk it; seems like there were key parts that were either not fleshed out or not mutually understood that made it fall through. And I hope that, too, is considered in his favor during his sentencing. 100 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Agreed. Don’t think jail time should be involved, given his first-time offender status and progress in recovery, but Joe needs to hold to his pledge not to get involved. Hope the law is merciful here, but law still needs to be law. 010 1
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024In a vacuum I agree, esp considering the taxes have been repaid, but he did have a special counsel investigation which uncovered the crimes to which he’s plead guilty (& some they didn’t pursue). Given that, I think it would be inappropriate for Joe to pardon him. 120 2
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024I think it depends, but given where the specifics of the case have landed, I think it would be inappropriate for Joe to pardon him. And, if he is sentenced, I would expect probation, taking into account the taxes have been paid and Hunter’s positive steps in recovery and accountability, etc. 210 2
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Wish him nothing but well in his sobriety and journey, but he did plead guilty to actual crimes- for which he should be fairly sentenced. 4501 50
David Jenson @dvdjnsn.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Please, no. He should only be sentenced commensurate to others guilty of the same crimes in the same brackets (ie, probation for first time offenders, etc), but no one should be above the law. 7702 70
