If you haven't seen it, Rhell looks super good. Like a throwback to proper crazy indie games of the 2010 era, where Devs would just run with batshit mechanics and you sort of can't believe no one's done it before.

My doctor just sat me down and told me he's going to turn me into an experimental beast. It will be a struggle coping with the loss of my inherent humanity, but at least I will be a violent mechanoid animal hybrid without the capacity for thought or speech. No one will buy your game if it isn’t 30 hours, 50 hours, 100 hours. I used to think this was driven by a crude form of evaluation – more time per dollar equals a better bargain. But this has never made much sense, as no such pressures exist in film, literature, music, etc. It wasn’t until reading Schüll that it clicked for me – it has nothing to do with temporal-money exchange rates, but addiction. We are playing to keep playing – it almost doesn’t matter what you put there, just so long as we can continue.

I think that’s also why some games with highly developed metas go for frequent ‘balance’ patches.They really serve the opposite purpose- unbalancing everything to restart the discovery process for its players. The wonkier the patch is the better- it keeps the meta in an immature state
