Thought I'd play around colorful accents for my sona, since it was mostly gray before. Could be refined but it seems nice :3

Apparently I'm already a top 500 mapper in the United States on OpenStreetMap... that's insane to me. I'm not *that* active, right? Surely the U.S. has a lot more active mappers than me, right?????
A screenshot of statistics about the OpenStreetMap contributor, Duskfall. She registered on June 1, 2026, and made a total of 16,405 map changes across 94 changesets, placing her at 412 in the list of the top 500 mappers in the United States of America.

okay now here's the actual thing I drew for @voidmcdash.bsky.social's PFP :3 I still haven't heard back from him on whether he likes the coloring or background, but he did like the line art so I think he'll probably appreciate this.

I like taking photos using the front(?) camera because my phone will automatically categorize it as a selfie even when I'm just using it to take funny photos of my cat. Observe:

Holy hell why is West Virginia's OpenStreetMap land cover data so comprehensive compared to its neighbors? This is insane. The rest of the U.S. has pretty poor land cover coverage, but not this state.
A screenshot of OpenStreetMap, focused in on the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is noticeably greener than its neighbors, indicating that it has more proper land cover data mapped out.A screenshot of the continental United States on OpenStreetMap. Most of the states have little land cover data, with some good coverage clustered around the west coast and small parts of the Rocky Mountains. Even at a national scale, West Virginia stands out for its comprehensive coverage.

I wanted it to feel the same as Obsidian's native backlinks/outlinks panels, so that's the style I'm vaguely aiming for here.
Obsidian's backlinks/outlinks panel. At the top is a row of icons for various actions like collapsing all items, searching, and sorting the list of linked mentions below it (backlinks).
020
Duskfall @duskfall.dev · 07/07/2026
It is the most horrid, dogshit code I've ever written, but I've been attempting to make myself a personal Obsidian plugin to replace one I've been using for some time... all because it uses emojis for icons.
A panel listing note titles that have been linked to but have no corresponding note for, or simply called, "unresolved links." It is very similar in appearance to Obsidian's native backlinks/outlinks panels. The interface of the plugin that my own is replacing. A title at the top reads "Pending notes." Below it is a description saying, "2777 notes linked, but not created yet. Times the note is linked is shown in parentheses."

Below is a list. Each item has a button with a magnifying glass emoji, another button with a plus sign emoji, the number of times a note was linked to in parentheses, and the title of the notes themselves.

Quarter 2 of 2026 is over, and my Obsidian vault is now at around 1.2k notes. Here is my graph view: #obsidiangraph
An Obsidian graph—featuring a variety of nodes and edges. Each node is an individual file and each edge is a hyperlink between them, representing connections across an entire "vault" (folder of one's notes). Nodes are differently colored based on arbitrary groups decided by the user and differently sized based on the number of links going to and from it.

Excuse my vagueposting, this was the design that really prompted me to make this post:
A redesign concept for Wikipedia. Each article section is divided into separate cards; the infobox is set off to the side as its own sidebar; there is "On this day," "Did you know," and "Recent news," sections related to the article subject (India) in the left sidebar; the bottom of the article has cards for related articles instead of a list; inline citations are color-coded; and the data in the infobox is richer; to list a few things happening in this redesign.

Indeed, it was quite the wait! In fact, I remember emailing their support about the lack of a dedicated themes page on their website in December 2025, and they teased the new Community Directory in response.
A screenshot of my email app with a subject line at the top reading, "Re: is there a community themes page?" Below is a response from Obsidian Support reading, "Hello Duskfall, not yet! This might just be the worst language picker I've ever seen in a UI concept... As we all know, there is only one language that uses the Latin alphabet.
A language picker UI concept with nine options. They are not labelled, and instead only have a single letter from different alphabets. The implication here being that there is only one language that uses the Latin alphabet.

Anyway, it's now much easier for editors to see and access, since I changed the layout style of the versions to fix a display issue, only to discover a new link placed next to the "title" that led to the template in question.
The old version information in the infobox. The versions are split up by platform. There is an awkward amount of space on the left of the version details because both the platforms and version numbers had to be crammed in a small space. The new infobox version details, which now take up the full width. Next to the "stable releases" label there is a small link that leads to the template where the version data comes from.

Something that greatly confuses me is the huge gap in page views between the Wikipedia article for Obsidian, Notion, and Evernote. Maybe it has to do with article quality? I have no idea what's happening here.

Apparently Bending Spoons attempted to acquire Obsidian in late 2024? What a fucking joke. Especially with what happened to Evernote once it got acquired by them. Source: x.com/kepano/statu...
An email from Bending Spoons with the subject line, "This might make you really suspicious."

It begins with a brief introduction from an employee at Bending Spoons, who quickly pivots to inquiring about the possibility of acquiring Obsidian—not without first acknowledging how "crazy" it might sound to Obsidian's developers.

The employee mentions how Obsidian's tight-knit community drew Bending Spoons in to the idea of acquiring them. They ask if Obsidian hates the idea, asking to arrange a short call to discuss the idea.

They then end off by stating how they would love to be on Obsidian's radar, as, in their words, they are "for the long term."

It seems we might get editing Markdown files in Obsidian without creating a vault in the future. In my opinion, vault-less editing should be really simple and straightforward; if theming is needed, maybe having some separate config for that might work?
A comment thread on Hacker News. A user expresses their desire to edit Markdown files using Obsidian without needing to create a vault. Kepano (Obsidian's CEO) replies to the comment saying that Obsidian plans to add it at some point, but questions around implementation are tricky because configuration largely happens at a vault level.

On top of that, Grok is also literally repeating the main points of Obsidian's manifesto...
An excerpt of a Grokipedia article on Obsidian, which states: "At its core, Obsidian adheres to five key principles: yours (free tools for everyone), durable (future-proof open file formats), private (on-device storage with optional end-to-end encrypted sync), malleable (extensible via thousands of community plugins and themes), and independent (no ads or data mining)."Obsidian's manifesto, saying the same five points as Grokipedia: Yours, Durable, Private, Malleable, and Independent.

You know, I knew Grokipedia was a bit of a shitshow, but having duplicate entries for Obsidian is crazy work. And then when people suggested removing the duplicate, Grok decided not to do anything about it.

Two different edit requests are made to remove the duplicate encyclopedia entry from Grokipedia. Both edit requests are rejected by Grok.

Reading this about Thymer's developers in their alpha release FAQ reminds me a lot about Obsidian's developers. Obsidian was developed by just two people (Erica Xu and Shida Li) who had worked together for years prior to the release of Obsidian.
A snippet of Thymer's alpha release FAQ that reads, "Who is 'we'? We're a small independent team, Diederik van Houten (@jdvhouten) and Wim Cools (@wcools). We've been building profitable bootstrapped software products together for over a decade (all still serving customers). We started working on Thymer more than 3 years ago, self-funding the development with a mission to build something big :)."

Alongside that, despite me using my own weird custom footnote solution, it might be nice for other Obsidian users to have a better way to quickly access their footnotes. Native Obsidian forces you to scroll all the way down to see them, offering no means to access it via the outline.
An Obsidian note that showcases note content on the left and Obsidian's outline panel on the right. The note's footnotes are visible as a different "section" that is separate from all other note content, but the outline does not offer a user any way of quickly accessing footnotes.
