Made some updates to my website today, so I'm feeling pretty good. It felt less good to learn that I only just now resolved an issue I had been meaning to work on since February... Anyway check out my new links page I guess: duskfall.dev/links/

Thought I'd play around colorful accents for my sona, since it was mostly gray before. Could be refined but it seems nice :3

I might have to make a blog post or something about the German word "Hausnummer" sometime because it has a surprising amount of figurative meaning. It also has an interesting origin since house numbering was not widespread in Europe until the 18th century.

I found out about this today. It seems pretty cool. I really ought to contribute to Wiktionary more.

So Internet Archive, Open Street Map, and Zenodo all currently getting hammered by fucking AI bots. Core pieces of research infrastructure under threat. And those of us trying to keep resources online for the public become the unpaid servants of the mega-rich AI shysters.

Part of me is very concerned at the idea that paying anything to some app could then be used to subsidize or fund generative AI. I know that I don't really get to choose how my money is spent on a piece of software, but seeing apps announce new AI features knowing I partly subsidized it feels bad.

how else would conveyer belts be powered? we all know there's a big factory somewhere that connects to all other conveyer belts and has its workers walk on the belts to get them moving in every factory

Enthralled by OpenStreetMap
In something that should not surprise anyone, I have spent the last two or so months mapping on OpenStreetMap (OSM) almost completely out of nowhere.

Debating on whether I should link to new blog posts I write here. Maybe I should. In other news, I've made some very small updates to my website today, so that's nice. Here's the link in case it's not already elsewhere on my account: duskfall.dev

And now by the sheer aura of my passion for OpenStreetMap, two of my friends made accounts today to try out mapping. We even made a silly group chat for it :3

Apparently I'm already a top 500 mapper in the United States on OpenStreetMap... that's insane to me. I'm not *that* active, right? Surely the U.S. has a lot more active mappers than me, right?????
A screenshot of statistics about the OpenStreetMap contributor, Duskfall. She registered on June 1, 2026, and made a total of 16,405 map changes across 94 changesets, placing her at 412 in the list of the top 500 mappers in the United States of America.

okay now here's the actual thing I drew for @voidmcdash.bsky.social's PFP :3 I still haven't heard back from him on whether he likes the coloring or background, but he did like the line art so I think he'll probably appreciate this.

In around two months it's nearly at 7,000 plugins. I have a love-hate relationship with Obsidian's new community plugin system because it's made publishing so easy, but that's allowed for so many crap plugins to flood the community plugins list.

And by reorganize, I'll have to just rewrite this shit anyway. I STILL haven't figured out virtual lists and the code is a mess of various iterations commented out...

I like taking photos using the front(?) camera because my phone will automatically categorize it as a selfie even when I'm just using it to take funny photos of my cat. Observe:

Attempting to implement virtual scrolling is going about as poorly as I expected it to. It broke my plugin again, yippee!!!

Got my Obsidian plugin to load large lists a little faster by using document fragments. I fear I'll probably have to go figure out how to implement virtual scrolling though.

Holy hell why is West Virginia's OpenStreetMap land cover data so comprehensive compared to its neighbors? This is insane. The rest of the U.S. has pretty poor land cover coverage, but not this state.
A screenshot of OpenStreetMap, focused in on the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is noticeably greener than its neighbors, indicating that it has more proper land cover data mapped out.A screenshot of the continental United States on OpenStreetMap. Most of the states have little land cover data, with some good coverage clustered around the west coast and small parts of the Rocky Mountains. Even at a national scale, West Virginia stands out for its comprehensive coverage.

I ended up breaking my plugin and almost abandoning it altogether, but I locked in and fixed it. It also runs WAYY quicker now but it's kind of a compromise so I'll need to find a better solution at some point...

The way Generative AI is marketed as a tool for thought is nonsense. It clearly is not used in that way by most people. Instead they just use it to do the thinking for them. Worryingly, AI is mostly controlled by corporations. What a time to be going through higher education.

It is the most horrid, dogshit code I've ever written, but I've been attempting to make myself a personal Obsidian plugin to replace one I've been using for some time... all because it uses emojis for icons.
A panel listing note titles that have been linked to but have no corresponding note for, or simply called, "unresolved links." It is very similar in appearance to Obsidian's native backlinks/outlinks panels. The interface of the plugin that my own is replacing. A title at the top reads "Pending notes." Below it is a description saying, "2777 notes linked, but not created yet. Times the note is linked is shown in parentheses."

Below is a list. Each item has a button with a magnifying glass emoji, another button with a plus sign emoji, the number of times a note was linked to in parentheses, and the title of the notes themselves.

I am very structured and organized.
A note in my Obsidian vault titled "Tag Dictionary". The note's entire content is as follows, "This note is in desperate need of revamping, so I am deleting all of its contents while I conjure up some evil ass tagging system from the depths of hell."

Quarter 2 of 2026 is over, and my Obsidian vault is now at around 1.2k notes. Here is my graph view: #obsidiangraph
An Obsidian graph—featuring a variety of nodes and edges. Each node is an individual file and each edge is a hyperlink between them, representing connections across an entire "vault" (folder of one's notes). Nodes are differently colored based on arbitrary groups decided by the user and differently sized based on the number of links going to and from it.

Obsidian went from around 2,700 plugins to just passing 5,000 since the community directory launched on May 12, 2026. There was an immediate spike to around 3,400 plugins based on the Obsidian blog post about it, and within the last day or so it's reached 5,000 total plugins...
