I hate to say it, but... It *does* have some value for programming. I just think some people overuse it, or companies feel they have to push it too hard.

Maybe he's thinking of the super cheap high street cosplay lenses. Those *can* be dangerous, but mainly only really if the person using them doesn't understand proper lens care. But yeah the decent branded regular-sized lenses are no different to monthly/annual clear contacts...

DIY is great and all, but I really need that room done... (and I'm tired of never ending expense, I dread to think how much I've spent so far) I'm also a bit frustrated that it'll probably need repainting again after floor work. At least skirting. More wasted time/money.

The underfloor is too uneven. It's sagging in places, and bowing in others. Some skirting is tight, some has gaps. Not terrible, but a problem for hard flooring. I think fixing this is beyond me. I've no idea what to do. Except pay probably a lot of money for a pro. More delays and expense. 😔

Hit quite a major setback with my house decoration that's really taken the wind out of my sails. So much is waiting on my studio room being ready. The room is finally repainted, new hard flooring is ready to go, removed the old carpet in preparation. Potentially just days away from it being usable.

Yeah, we're kinda drowning in documentation, often in unhelpful formats. What's the primary, single source of truth?

It's probably a good thing we all work from home. And we don't have a requirement to have our cameras turned on for calls. The number of times I've checked I was on mute and not visible before cursing out loud, or facepalming forcefully... (one day I'm going to screw up there, I just know it)

I ask a question to a senior frontend dev about how we want some future feature to work. He built the prototype. I need to design/approve the backend structures for it. The answer? Wait for it... "Just get the prototype, and ask AI how it works" I F*CKING ASKED YOU! *breathes into a paper bag*

Another thing I've noticed, which is... crap... Because we're so heavily using AI for this project (yes, I know), I'm often presented with a document/diagram detailing plans. I'm checking it, assuming thought has gone into every detail. Nope, they just had AI generate it. So, meaningless then.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of those kind of people, they can't help but "impose" their preferred approach on everyone. "Fancy hopping on a quick call to work this out?" Uh... no, I'd rather not. Just give me some time myself. If I need to discuss things, I'll reach out.

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
With my new team/project, I've really started to notice differences in how people like to work. Many people in my team like to figure things out on a call, solve things in real time with others. I really don't. That kind of pressure doesn't work for me. I need my own space to figure things out.

Keep going around in circles on a technical discussion at work. I'm *this* close to exclaiming: "Unless I'm missing something, this isn't that fucking hard". Maybe I am missing something, but... it isn't that fucking hard.

I'm making progress on the new house, but I'm so tired... had to force myself to buy groceries after work today, because I was running out of food and couldn't find the time. Doing this alone is tough. At least my bedroom is done. I have a nice place to sleep. The best time of the day is bedtime.

Things I want to do, but can't at the moment because either the room needed isn't done yet, or the equipment/space is blocked by other stuff: * Exercise (not worked out for over 9 weeks) * Socialise in VRC * Write music, play piano, edit videos, budgeting * Make stuff, 3d print * Do bonsai work

It's only Tuesday, and I could do with a beer 😔 I feel totally worn out tonight. Feels like winter has suddenly arrived with the early onset of night. Still so much to do on the house, to unblock me from doing other things I really want to do. But this evening... can't do anything.

I don't have one, it's always neighbours! (I am actually waiting on a Reolink video doorbell at the moment, I don't have anything right now, and being able to see/ignore certain visitors would be very useful)

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's so, so strange, but I genuinely feel "triggered" by the default Ring doorbell sound. It's like it jabs at some hidden PTSD, but I've no idea why/what. I feel a sudden injection of adrenaline, and it's genuinely unpleasant to me. How bizarre.

Yeah, you too. I'm gonna miss Pawsome this year, it would be particularly good to get away for a bit. I just took delivery of over £550 worth of flooring, so... yeah. IRL priorities unfortunately.

Bah. I hoped to do the LondonFurs meet on the 10th October. But scheduling roofing work has got in the way. I'm justifying it by saying it's just one weekend after Pawsome so maybe there won't be many I know there. Can't do the Halloween one, but I'll try to attend November. How time flies.

Isn't it funny how you can curate a long list of films to watch, and when you want to watch a film, don't fancy any of them...

I'll admit, I kinda lost track of the plot points at those moments 😛

I miss furry/costume stuff, VR, writing music, editing videos, making things, which I can't really do without that room. DIY is great, genuinely (so far), but it doesn't scratch the same creative itches. What are the chances I'll actually do those things when the room is set up?
I know myself all too well. I really want to do non-specific things when I can't do them. When I can do them, the non-specificity cripples me, so I end up not doing them again. Whee.

I'm enjoying doing DIY. But one room (studio) not being ready for furniture is blocking so many things. It's keeping most of my stuff in my garage and dining room. Flooring is ordered. Walls mostly prepped. Need to decide on paint colours, then paint it, and floor it. Just a basic refresh for now.

My sense of time is so messed up recently, due to all the house stuff. My PT wanted to prepare a session date in October. I thought "That's ages away!!" Um... nope. I keep thinking "I *have* to get on top of my address changes, I gave back the rental house ages ago!" Um... nope. It was yesterday.

Just moved into the new house, one I actually "own". It's weird. Even at this early stage, even though it's very much unfinished, I feel a sense of comfort I've never experienced before. This place is mine.

Oh definitely, can't wait for the moment where I can actually relax and breathe. Sure there's always going to be stuff that needs doing, but the urgency will have passed.

Don't have time for food shopping, or cooking my Gousto dinners. I *need* to practice my trumpet for a challenging upcoming playthrough - don't have time. I'm having to do never-ending house admin during my work hours. Don't have time. Good problem to have, but damn I'm ready for it to back off.

Worn out. Work: unfamiliar new project and AI 🤯 Also: picked up the keys to my new house last Friday. Since then, I've either been doing my day job, or immediately at the house doing redecoration. Job: 8-4. House: 4-9. Every day. Need to get as much stuff done before I properly move in in 8 days.

But then again, while I sorta enjoy programming, if I had an alternative way to support myself, I'd give it up in a heartbeat. So I don't really care, personally. But I do think it's a problem, especially for the future, when more and more people don't really know how things work.
010
Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Yeah, that's definitely a problem. Hopefully the insane compute requirements will reduce over time, but I don't see that happening any time soon. And yeah, no getting around the piracy thing 😕. I can totally see programmers, me too, losing their edge. Why bother to learn details? (they might say)
110
Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Yeah, it does add a lot of overhead. It's not a panacea. I don't have such a visceral reaction about AI for coding as I do for media. I think some assistance makes sense - there's so many frameworks/practices, it's hard to keep up. And fixing problems/refactoring can sometimes be complex/annoying.
110
Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I worry that we'll quickly reach a point where someone asks "Why is this here?" and the response from them/me would be "I dunno, AI put it there". Maybe it doesn't really matter. Maybe the era of person-readable code is coming to an end. What does it matter if it works, if AI can maintain it?

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Code reviews are more important than ever. It's using a framework that's new to us, and I see some changes, and go 🤷‍♂️ "I think that makes sense..?". It's so much harder to get my head down into a task. And I've only been at it 2 weeks. Hopefully familiarity will improve, and it'll settle down...

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
On a new project at work, building a new application from scratch. First time we're heavily using AI to do it. And... Sure, it's impressive. Sure, it's possible to move much faster. But not only do I have to build more, I also get loads more code reviews to do. Task switching and pressure is rough.

It was specifically mentioned as a requirement. I have to provide receipts.

As my landlord intends to sell this property rather than put it back up for rental, I asked him if I definitely still need to get it arranged. He confirmed I do. So that's another £350 gone, yay.

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Yep. And I recently found out that I'm required to pay for professional cleaning of my rental house before I move out, so that's fun too. Sorta makes sense, but an expense I wasn't expecting. Hopefully not many more left... except for new flooring, paint, and any immediate purchases required...

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Sure, what's yet another multi-hundred pound bill, it's all just abstract numbers at this point... 😬 Before I know it, it'll be Christmas, and gift expectations. Great. Moving house is expensive. I need break from all these expenses...

I still find it weirdly amusing to think that at some point, at the start of businesses requiring websites, the hardware store B&Q thought: "... shit"

I know it's weird to say, but... I'm getting very tired of so many online services being multi-factor-auth. Not everything needs it, I just don't care, let me in quickly, I don't want to have to grab my phone to log in every time, grrrrrr...

Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Wow, that's handy..! I was searching through perhaps more of a buyers market than usual, but I did view 20 houses... (managed to knock £10k off the asking price of mine though so that's something)
000
Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Yes, exactly. Sure, physical meetings do require people to turn up slightly early so everyone's ready to go on time, but online meetings, generally people are ready the moment they join. Starting online meetings 5+ minutes early doesn't respect people's time.
000
Durandal @durandal2uk.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Maybe this is unprofessional, I dunno, but I refuse to start work meeting calls early. It's a matter of principle. If someone starts a call early, I make a point to wait until the actual start time. Even if it means literally just watching the clock until it ticks over. #MiniRant
