I've spent a few days talking to longstanding and proper City fans who are absolutely horrified by the club's brazen 'fake news'/conspiracy response to the Premier League charges. There's a bit of gallows humour too. One of them is very much looking forward to Colwyn Bay away next season.

I've been looking forward to this for a while. John Berger's stuff on art is great and well-known, but 'A Fortunate Man', about a country doctor in the 1960s, is one of my all-time favourite books.

It’s wild that politicians don’t seem to grasp the degree to which universities contribute to the economy- local, regional, national. The failure to intervene is a stain on this govt - a shocking dereliction of duty to every worker, every local business, every student, every area that is suffering

All solidarity to my brilliant former colleagues at Exeter. The careful, deliberate dismantling of british higher education by its nominal 'leaders' - focused especially on the arts & humanities - is going to be rememberd as one of the major scandals of this generally awful/scandalous age.

Lots of chat about Andy Burnham here today, so I'll just say this. His work on Hillsborough from 2009 onward was genuinely significant and achieved an enormous amount in the face of official indifference. Without him, there'd have been no Independent Panel and no verdict of unlawful death.

I found a newspaper report marking my grandfather's retirement from medical practice yesterday. It was probably newsworthy because he worked in one place for 40+ years, starting just after WW1 and retiring in 1956 when he was in his 70s. I also discovered from this he got run over by his own car!

The fawning over these two, purely because they're Hollywood actors, drives me mad. When did you last hear the owners of any other club do a full 90 minute commentary on a televised match? It's embarrassing. Football clubs are community assets and should be owned by their fans.

The lack of concern given to US influence over British politics compared to say Russian or Chinese, when the current US govt and associated business elites are overtly committed to undermining liberal democracy in Western Europe *and* have the leverage to do just that, is incredibly alarming.

Worth saying that the Churchillian fantasy involved Britain at the pivot of three international relationships: Atlanticist, European and Commonwealth. We torched one, another is collapsing in real time, and the third is at best flimsy. It would be good to face reality some time soon.
