24. Method For Murder (THTDB) - What better way to drive your cuckolded husband over the edge than to convince him your bf is one of his own horror creations come to life?! Well, loads, unless you really enjoy effortful takes on Turn of the Screw. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

25. Bargain In Death (VOH) - Insurance scam/grave-robbery comedy of errors. Has the farcical energy of a Frasier episode, but uses it disappointingly. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

26. Creeping Vine (DTHOH) - Bernard ‘M’ Lee selling numerous lines about how a plant that can put out a fire could take over the world. Sadly this is never convincingly demonstrated, mainly it just kills this guy and a spaniel. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

Lewisham residents: keep your eyes peeled for Spike Milligan today. If nobody sees him, that confirms a) heaven exists, and b) Jeffrey Archer didn't make it.

Out now! 'Horror and Disability' by @drdarrengray.bsky.social is the first study of disability in modern horror film and television, demonstrating how the genre turns bodies, vulnerability and difference into sites of fear and resistance. 📚️ www.uwp.co.uk/book/horror-... @xaldanareyes.bsky.social

Horror and Disability is the first comprehensive study exploring disability within twenty-first-century horror films and television. Using critical theories along with disability and cultural studies, it examines how horror depicts mobility impairments, blindness, deafness, neurodiversity, illness, ageing and physical differences, demonstrating how these bodies are portrayed as monstrous, vulnerable, empowered or resistant

27. Enoch (TG) - A cat stares at a guy, and the guy starts killing. Even if you really hate cats, you have to concede that the guy's just looking for an excuse. On the plus side: very handsome cat. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

28. Waxworks (THTDB) - Distractingly feeble love triangle between Peter Cushing and Joss Ackland over a severed wax head. Could have been a camp classic, but in spite of the cast and conceit, it's astonishingly boring. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

29. Terror Over Hollywood (TG) - Iconic film stars are avoiding career/actual death by becoming immortal robots, and somehow nobody notices. Could possibly have worked as an Illuminati satire but played way too straight. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

30. Mr Steinway (TG) - We’ll be seeing a lot of Torture Garden early doors, and its absolute nadir is a piano being so consumed by sexual jealousy that it sort-of moves about and goes off-key. Probably decent if you own a haunted incel piano. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

So without further ado: 31. Lucy Comes To Stay (As) - Epicly trite ‘split personality’ mental-health-stigma trash. Britt Ekland is many things, but she is not convincing as a malign psychological influence. #AmicusHalloweenCountdown

011

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

sometimes the answer to the eternal dramatist's question of 'what drives this person to be as they are?' genuinely is 'they are an idle dickhead doing something shitty because it's easy'

010

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

we'd do a lot better to make art about people with depth, rather than people who seem superficially interesting/exciting/divisive, because those are not the same thing

110

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

we're going to see a lot of poor-quality Piddingtons in art in the future, and they're all going to be about the people who have no depth. same as the manosphere has no actual depth. same as serial killers have no actual depth.

110

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

and i've thought about this as a note for years, and increasingly i've felt: 'No, we can't, because as a dramatic entity they don't really have depth. They're just being throwaway shitty because it suits them. There's nothing there i consider interesting to write about.'

110

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

and the feedback i got from the industry was essentially 'can we have more of the villagers? can we look more at what they do and how they reach that point?'

110

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

i modelled the killers on arts workers i've known, made them a reflection of society, rather than what's wrong with society. they do horrible things, but only because the demand for horrible-thing-doers exists. an interesting knotty way of looking at things, i thought.

110

the duncan-ny valley @duncangates.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

here's a thing: i once wrote a play about contract killers being part of the chaotic FTC economy the same as every other freelancer. they get hired by a shitty little village to 'deal with' an undesirable who's been state-housed nearby.
