every car should come with a feature that's just a button on the dash you can press when you're going 15 over and someone is still riding your ass. it would make a little sign pop up on your rear bumper that reads "what do you actually reasonably expect me to do for you right now?"

i've been playing the oc in the background while i pack and once again i'm at the stage of the show where i think it's absolutely buckwild that they were trying to present julie cooper as being in the wrong rather than entirely fucking reasonable about..... honestly a lot of different storylines

If you're a teacher, I have a new "using AI is like using a forklift on the weights at the gym" metaphor I've been using. I asked my students (they're in 7th grade) the thing they are really good at making for themselves in the kitchen. It's what you'd expect: Mac & cheese, PB&J, noodles, eggs.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

#antisemitism I just need to point out that this is everywhere. It’s all over. It’s getting worse. It’s incredibly scary. If you’re not a Jew, you should be aware and if you’re able to, call it out when you can. Unsettling doesn’t begin to describe it. It’s insidious. It’s constant.

thinkin abt this lil scum villain ficlet again

The lead-up to a new season of Survivor is, Shen Qingqiu finds, still the worst part. Since it's an All-Stars season, they're kept sequestered from each other even more than he remembers. Of course he has a good sense of who's playing here in the islands off the coast of Sulawesi — the Survivor veteran whisper network is alive and well. He has it on good authority that Liu Qingge (Palau, challenge beast, came in seventh) and Sha Hualing (Madagascar, Survivor's first villain, finalist) are both participating.

But it's not like he can talk to Liu Qingge. Given the way that production has separated everyone, he can only assume that the one person he's seen (Ming Fan, who was voted out pre-merge in Shen Qingqiu's own season, at a great distance) is going to be on a separate tribe.

So he enters into the season intro and opening reward challenge blind. They're dressed in the tribe-affiliated colored clothing production selects from their wardrobes and boated in separately to the beach where Yue Qingyuan stands, in his ubiquitous baseball cap, with that easy smile he always wears during his opening speech.

Shen Qingqiu only half-listens as Yue Qingyuan introduces all of the players. He's watched all the preceding six seasons closely, to get a sense of the style of his potential competitors and plan out who he might choose to ally with. If someone chooses to ally with him. He knows he has a bit of a… reputation, in that regard.

Which means he's taken totally aback when another canopied boat alights at the incandescently-sunny beach. He notes, first, the cameras drawing closer, as if anticipating some sensational TV.

Then — oh fuck — Luo Binghe slouches out of the boat. He's — fuck, fuck, fuck — dressed in darker shades of green than Shen Qingqiu is wearing. Green, so they're going to be on the same tribe. Darker, because... the producers are telling some kind of story, probably, given how bright his outfit was during Caramoan.

Shen Qingqiu flashes back to that last syrupy-hot day under the Philippine sun. Exhausted, day 37, the blisters on his feet bursting and immediately forming more blisters under the tender scabs, annoyed by the young, beautiful charismatic underdog clinging to him who was so likely to get a hero edit in post-production. The way he broke their alliance and scrambled to get Luo Binghe voted out. The way he got only one vote in the final tribal council, and how Luo Binghe refused to meet his eyes the entire time.

Fuck. Luo Binghe is going to get him voted out the very first time their tribe loses an immunity challenge. He's charismatic; he's a talented player; Shen Qingqiu is known as a bit of a villain and challenge beast from his season. He's going to be an easy target. Goodbye, Survivor All-Stars, you were a nice dream while you lasted.

Shen Qingqiu stares doggedly ahead, trying not to make eye contact or give the cameras any kind of facial reaction as Luo Binghe trudges up to their mat on the beach.

Yue Qingyuan pauses in his narration of events. His smile broadens as he regards Shen Qingqiu's tribal mat. The roar of the motors of the approaching boats subside, and Shen Qingqiu feels the telltale prickle of his mic pack against the small of his back.

Oh, so production is going to expect a reaction after all, then.

Luo Binghe draws up in front of him. "Shizun," he drawls, sketching a mockery of a bow.

His smile doesn't reach his eyes.

Shen Qingqiu is so fucked.

"How did I let that asshole talk me into this?" Wei Ying asked Wen Qing, sighing as she finished tying off his braid.

"Don't ask me," Wen Qing said. "I try to avoid Jin Zixun at all costs. Can't owe him a favor if you don't talk to him, you know."

"Now you tell me," Wei Ying sighed. He pulled his mask down over his face. "How do I look?"

Wen Qing gave him an appraising look. "Ridiculous," she said.

Wei Ying deflated. "I thought I'd at least look scary," he said. "The Yiling Laozu is supposed to be scary, isn't he?"

"Not to those he protects," she said, and patted the cheek of his mask. "I hope this is worth it."

"Me too," said Wei Ying, as cheerfully as he could muster. "Okay. Okay, I'm off. WIsh me luck."
Owing Jin Zixun a favor was the worst. Wei Ying was lucky that Jiang Yanli had managed, in her relationship with Jin Zixuan, to defray the worst of the possible ways Jin Zixun may have called in the favor. But still. It wasn't like playing a role on Jin Zixun's dumb new show, Punk'd, was desirable.

Wei Ying waited in the canyon, robes swirling around him. It was hot and dusty there. Uncomfortable. Jin Zixun had claimed that there wasn't a precise time the target was supposed to arrive, just that it was supposed to be sometime during the afternoon, though Wei Ying wouldn't put it past Jin Zixun to be lying just to inconvenience Wei Ying.

The ambiance would be so much better if they were actually in the Burial Mounds, but it hadn't been in the travel plans of the mysterious target Wei Ying was supposed to pretend to hold up, and anyway, there was no way Wei Ying would have let Jin Zixun film there. Qiongqi Path was on Jin lands, at least, and not too far for Wei Ying to travel.

Wei Ying's earpiece crackled. "He's coming," Jin Zixun said.

So Wei Ying straightened his mask, activated the wind talismans they'd strewn the area with, and waited.

When he saw his target entering onto the path, he blinked. Blinked again. "Hanguang-jun??" he demanded, in a whisper that was more hiss than anything. "That's who we're pranking?"

"His face annoys me," Jin Zixun said. "Go on then, do your worst."

Lan Zhan isn't going to be impressed, Wei Ying thought. At least Jin Zixun hadn't added any clauses about getting good content for his dumb show when he called in his favor.

Hanguang-jun approached, and the Yiling Laozu pounced.

Swords were too complicated, these days, so instead of holding a blade to Lan Zhan's throat, Wei Wuxian twirled his flute menacingly in his fingers. "Ah, La- Hanguang-jun," he said, adapting a wicked tone, pitching his voice so it was less recognizably his own. "Fancy meeting you here."
Lan Zhan drew up short. He blinked at Wei Ying.

"It is I," Wei Ying explained. "The dreaded Yiling Laozu. I am here to, uh, hold you up. I require all the money on your person."

"Wei Ying?" Lan Zhan said. He was frowning now, not that the viewers of Jin Zixun's show would be able to tell. "If you needed money you could have just asked me."

"Who is this Wei Ying?" Wei Ying said. "I'm the terror of Qishan. The scourge of Lanling. The worst person Gusu has ever seen. I'm very evil and horrible, Lan Zhan, you better submit to my demands now if you want to be safe from my rage."

Lan Zhan blinked again. "Is this a sex thing?" he asked, after a moment. "I didn't think you were into that sort of thing."

It was Wei Ying's turn to blink. "What the fuck," Jin Zixun hissed into his earpiece, but Wei Ying ignored him. "What," he said. "Roleplay?"

"No," Lan Zhan said. "Dominating."

"Why on earth would you think I wasn't into dominating?" Wei Ying asked, crossing his arms. He realized, belatedly, that he had quite forgotten that he was supposed to look menacing and scary. Ah, well, it was too late at this point.

"I've met you before," Lan Zhan said. He blinked, and gave Wei Ying a long, slow once-over. "I also doubt you could hold me up if you tried."

"I could absolutely hold you up," Wei Ying protested. "I'm strong. I'm scrappy."

"I could hold you up," Lan Zhan said, evenly. Like he had thought about it before. Like it was a normal observation: the sky was blue; Qiongqi Path was a hot dusty scourge of a place; Jin Zixun was profoundly obnoxious; Lan Zhan could hold Wei Ying up.

Wei Ying shivered.
-

Three hours later, Jin Zixun stormed up to Wei Ying. He snatched the earpiece away with a scowl. "What the fuck was that?" he snapped. "I can't use any of that footage at all. I thought you could at least intimidate him!"

"If you'd told me it was Lan Zhan I would have let you know it would never work," Wei Ying said, unconcerned.

"How long have you been dating?"

"Uh," said Wei Ying. He squinted at the sun, checking its position in the sky. "A couple hours now? I guess?"

"Three," Lan Zhan confirmed. He bowed shallowly to Jin Zixuan. "Thank you for orchestrating this."

"I didn't—" Jin Zixun sputtered.

"Say it," Wei Ying said, elbowing Lan Zhan. "Say the thing."

"Jin Zixun," Lan Zhan said, solemnly. "It would seem… that you've been punk'd."

His smile doesn't reach his eyes.

Shen Qingqiu is so fucked.

mid-aughts lj rp led me to apply to the college i attended and take the class that made me switch my major to the thing i eventually got my phd in (friend from an rpg suggested her college was similar to others on my list and told me i would like a particular class) so possibly that

remix reveals!! i wrote this weird little sci-fi au based on the work of a very dear friend of mine 💫 instead of resurrecting into a new body, wei ying has cybernetic enhancements after his near-death. it takes some adjusting. 💫 wangxian, 5k, rated e 💫 archiveofourown.org/works/83890916
a screencap of the title and summary for "neither sink nor swim" by ao3 user perilously (me!). the summary is as follows:

Wei Ying never died, but he was resurrected anyway.

Lan Zhan still looks at him the same, that unrelenting gaze spiked through with adoration if you know where to find it. Lan Zhan doesn’t care if Wei Ying has both of his eyeballs. He doesn’t care about the materials that make up Wei Ying's hands and legs. He acts like he doesn’t even notice, and hey. If the whole world was a hermetically-sealed pod that contained no one but him and Lan Zhan, he could bluff like none of it ever happened. The memories would be just that: memories. He’d fold them up, origami of the mind, and stick them under the center console of his brain with a wad of well-chewed gum. Bam.

i think the most interesting trend i'm noticing in student papers this year is an increase in language along the lines of "[term], if that really is the correct term (I don't remember)" nothing is stopping you from double checking? this is inevitably a regular paper with full access to resources?

what they don't tell you about being in fandom for multiple decades & being a professor is that sometimes a student will give a presentation and say the title of a fic you read 17 years ago like twelve times, and every time you're going to be yote into thinking about [redacted] instead of grading

spent yesterday making both this jam (strawberry ginger rhubarb with vanilla and black pepper) and this bread (basic loaf)
it's a piece of sandwich loaf-shaped bread with red jam on top. really the post says it all
