So, whether you're arriving in Dublin for the first time or coming back for the hundredth: fáilte! ☘️
060
Dublin 2029 @dublin2029.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
This gives fáilte a richer sense than the word welcome, as it captures the positive reception or gladness associated with their arrival. The word has remained part of the Irish language for centuries and is now one of the most recognisable Irish words, appearing on signs and in greetings!
150
Dublin 2029 @dublin2029.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
🌱 Where does it come from? Fáilte comes from Old Irish fáilte, so its history goes back well over a thousand years! It means welcome or hospitality, and is related to the idea of receiving or welcoming someone, and the joy associated with their arrival.
150
Dublin 2029 @dublin2029.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
📖 How is it used? You’ll often hear fáilte in phrases such as “Fáilte romhat” as a welcome (literally, “welcome before you”), or “Céad míle fáilte”, meaning “a hundred thousand welcomes.”

Dublin 2029 @dublin2029.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The f is pronounced normally, while the t is softened, giving the word its distinctive -cheh or -teh ending. Around areas of Dublin you might even hear hear a much more throaty FAWL-tcha too!

Dublin 2029 @dublin2029.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
This month’s word is fáilte - meaning welcome 🗣️ How do you say it? Fáilte varies by Irish dialect and the final sound is not pronounced identically throughout the provinces of Ireland. Roughly it's either FAWL-cheh in the Northern counties and around Dublin, or FAWL-the in the Southernmost regions
Light grey text across the top reads ‘Irish Word of the Month’. Below, in larger white text it reads ‘Fáilte’ with ‘FAWL-cheh or FAWL-teh’ below. In the bottom right corner is a light blue planet, from the Dublin 2029 logo and black stars are scattered across the image. The background is light blue.

Your donations help us to run our fantables - like the one Philippa is sat at here - put on our parties and sponsor events at other conventions, and as an added bonus for you buying a pre-support now will become an attending supplement and is the cheapest way to get your convention membership!

A little Dublin slang for you: yo-yos. That's what we call euros, as in, “A head of cabbage will set you back 2 or 3 yo-yos.” Why are we telling you this? Putting together a Worldcon bid costs money! Our bid is looking for support from those in the wider SFF community who have the means to help!
A photo of Philippa sat at the Dublin fantable at Octocon. She is a white woman with chin-length blonde hair wearing glasses and a black and white patterned top with a Dublin 2029 badge pinned to her chest. The table has an Irish flag spread over it with flyers, bookmarks, badges and sweets spread over it. There is a large Dublin 2029 standing banner behind the table.

You might have noticed us soft launching our new logo around Eurocon and LA Worldcon, and we are very excited to share our new logo with everyone! After much discussion and deliberation, based on the original art by Shevaun Frazier, we have our new logo!
A photo of JC and Matylda stood together at the Dublin party at Eurocon. JC is a white man wearing a foam hat shaped like a block of yellow Swiss cheese. He is also wearing a dark blue Dublin 2029 tshirt. It has the new Dublin 2029 logo. It is a stylised lower case ‘d'. Within the circle of the letter is a drawing of a light blue planet with small craters, surrounded by stars. Below it reads 'DUBLIN 2029’. Matylda is a white woman with dark hair tied back, and is wearing read rimmed glasses, and a black tshirt over a red long sleeved top and blue trousers.

There’s not many languages where ‘mh’ and ‘bh’ are pronounced ‘v’, or ‘d’fh’ is used to express the past tense for a verb beginning with f! To kick-off our introduction we’re starting strong (and without scary spellings) with Éire (pronounced AIR-eh), meaning Ireland 🇮🇪

Dublin 2029 @dublin2029.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
While most people in Ireland, especially in Dublin, speak English, the first national language is actually Irish! It’s probably very different from any languages you’re familiar with because it doesn’t descend from any Germanic, Romance or Slavic languages and can have some scary-looking spellings
Light grey text across the top reads ‘Irish Word of the Month’. Below, in larger white text it reads ‘Éire’ with ‘AIR-eh’ below. In the bottom right corner is a light blue planet, from the Dublin 2029 logo and black stars are scattered across the image. The background is light blue.

I thought this was a small job and it wasn’t, but I loved every minute of it! My proudest moment was helping run an event in the Science Gallery with astronaut Janette Epps. I loved hearing her talk about her experience and getting to meet her afterwards.

I was excited and knew I wanted to help - little did I know what I was getting myself into! When I got home I got my membership and signed up to volunteer, but was doing other things for a while. I jumped back in a few months before the con as administrator of the Fringe Division.

I heard about the Hugo awards for years on the Escape Pod podcast, and I always thought they were something that happened in the USA only. I was flying to a conference in Germany when someone from Scotland told me that Worldcon was coming to Dublin, my home town.
