Mainstream parties shift toward Euroscepticism when radical-right parties gain support and secure parliamentary seats, regardless of whether gains are actual or predicted. 🗳️ 🇪🇺 📊

New paper in @jeppjournal.bsky.social! With @leandrebenoit.bsky.social, we find that mainstream parties become more Eurosceptic as radical right support rises (whether in past elections or opinion polls), but only when the radical right is in parliament. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

There are now more Tory supporters who *say* they voted Remain than Leave. In the BES, which has EU vote information from previous waves rather than recalled vote, the split is 50-35 for Leave (vote intention is 2025 though). If anything, false recall is even more damning for the Brexit project.

... but I will be forever grateful to him for the catharsis that I, with most Hungarians, felt last night. What he did belongs in the history books. But how did he do it? There will be a lot written about it, and the factors that made it possible. This thread is only about political mobilization.

some people love quoting "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must." That was Athens saying that at the height of its empire. Few of those people seem to remember what happened to Athens the very next year.

Melvyn Bragg has been one of the last standard-bearers for a really important, and unfashionable, idea: that good conversation, between people who really know their stuff, on complex or difficult subjects, can be fantastic radio - and that the national broadcaster should do this. I hope it endures.
