A candidate for alderman asked me to provide them with background reading on housing, and it turned into quite a list! I enjoyed putting it together, so I thought I'd also share it here. I've organized into three categories: describing the problem, describing solutions, and partnership solutions 🧵

Yea they can use PRVs, and it’s plausible that copper or galvanized steel may still be more practical for some of the building-wide distribution. But there’s a lot of low-hanging fruit within individual units, where plastics like PEX and CPVC are often meaningfully cheaper and easier to install

My next article in the @acitythatworks.bsky.social building code series is up, doing a deep dive on the plumbing code. Come to learn about the one weird trick the city could use to shave 5% off construction costs, stay to learn about the 19th century joint coupling method the city still mandates!

Requirements and restrictions that add little to no safety benefits and significant construction costs are making it unnecessarily difficult for the city to build desperately needed new units.

The real answer--as adopted by progressive advocates around the country, and electeds from Pritzker to Johnson to Mamdani--is that getting rid of regulations that require million-dollar mansions and investing in affordable housing are complementary policies, not at odds with each other.

Besides walker, has your opinion changed on any of the position players from the start of the season? To me, Winn, Burly, Herrera, and Gorman look about the same as last year. VSII losing what little power he did have is concerning.
