The art for Julie Grimm #1 is DONE, and R.L. Black knocked it out of the park. It's a horror-noir occult detective story influenced equally by Warren/EC horror and Vertigo classics like HELLBLAZER and LUCIFER. I'm SO happy with how this came out and can't wait to get it out into the world.

Knowing I won't get the first-time creator bump from close friends and family going forward, my goal is to reach more readers with less affinity who won't pay as much for a basic reward. Does a $12 reward for a physical + digital copy of a 32-page full color issue feel right to you?

330

Dan Sánchez is writing Julie Grimm @dscomix.bsky.social · 04/08/2025

Appreciate this. The primary reward tier for my first campaign was $15 for the 32-page physical + digital issue. We passed our funding goal, in no small part thanks to friends and family who wanted to support us. Thinking through how to scale this & reach more readers, I know that has to come down.

Here is a preview of the first two pages! I love @rlblackink.bsky.social's retro-comic style. It's reminiscent of Golden and Bronze age art from EC and Warren classics, paired with storytelling that calls to mind 90s Vertigo titles like HELLBLAZER and LUCIFER with a dash of SCENE OF THE CRIME.

It’s important to get as many followers during pre-launch as possible. It helps get the campaign off to a strong start and gets the attention of Kickstarter, who can market it as well. Hard to believe it's almost here. I can’t wait for everyone to read this book. Thank you & please spread the word!

Had to share R.L.’s inks for the splash page (page 2) of Julie Grimm. Opening this felt like opening one of my favorite Vertigo comics from the early 90’s. Can’t wait to get to see this colored. We’re finishing up a 7-page preview for the Kickstarter campaign launching in May. Big things coming!!

Splash page for Julie Grimm. A terrified priest sinks into the water, dragged down by a metal briefcase clasped to his ankle, as demonic hands reach for him below. A narration caption reads “a leap of faith.” The issue credits read “Julie Grimm. In Search of Demons part 1 of 3. Writer — Dan Sanchez. Artist — R.L. Black. Editor — Brittany Matter.”

This is a pretty convincing breakdown of the issues with Substack. I started one to give readers behind the scenes looks at Julie Grimm and promote my new imprint because it was free and easy, but I’ll probably move to Ghost once the book is out.
