The art for Julie Grimm #1 is DONE, and R.L. Black knocked it out of the park. It's a horror-noir occult detective story influenced equally by Warren/EC horror and Vertigo classics like HELLBLAZER and LUCIFER. I'm SO happy with how this came out and can't wait to get it out into the world.

Here is a preview of the first two pages! I love @rlblackink.bsky.social's retro-comic style. It's reminiscent of Golden and Bronze age art from EC and Warren classics, paired with storytelling that calls to mind 90s Vertigo titles like HELLBLAZER and LUCIFER with a dash of SCENE OF THE CRIME.

Had to share R.L.’s inks for the splash page (page 2) of Julie Grimm. Opening this felt like opening one of my favorite Vertigo comics from the early 90’s. Can’t wait to get to see this colored. We’re finishing up a 7-page preview for the Kickstarter campaign launching in May. Big things coming!!

Splash page for Julie Grimm. A terrified priest sinks into the water, dragged down by a metal briefcase clasped to his ankle, as demonic hands reach for him below. A narration caption reads “a leap of faith.” The issue credits read “Julie Grimm. In Search of Demons part 1 of 3. Writer — Dan Sanchez. Artist — R.L. Black. Editor — Brittany Matter.”

Perfect weekend of comix, art, movies, birthdays and a walk over the bridge with my clone.

A tired writer, somehow pushing 40, holding his son’s hand at the top of the Williamsburg Bridge.

I was also super psyched to pick up a copy of THE SICKNESS trade from the Uncivilized table at MoCCA. Brilliant, disturbing work from @lonnienadler.bsky.social and @jennacha.bsky.social.

Love this weird horror mini-comic series SCORPIO VENUS RISING that I picked up from @corinnehalbert.bsky.social at MoCCA yesterday. I’m also a big nunsploitation fan so I’m excited to read ACID NUN next.

One of my favorite writing/editing/lettering jokes in a comic comes in Lucifer #73, after the main story arc had wrapped and Mike Carey was just letting it fly to close things out.

This newsletter on creative anxiety from @sarahccomics.bsky.social is so smart and comes at the perfect time as someone close to putting my first comic out into the world. “More often than not, those imagined worst-case scenarios are no more likely to transpire than the outcomes we actually want.”

I’m not exactly sure what the answer is here, since it’s something I’m still working on. But I think it has to do with stepping back and reminding myself that, in the present moment everything is fine. Nothing bad is actually happening to me as I sit here typing away on my laptop. And it’s about remembering that all the terrible future outcomes I’m imagining — publishers and readers hating my ideas and never wanting to read another thing I write ever again — are just anxiety-induced fictions.
Our brains want to protect us, so they imagine the worst-case scenario out of the false belief that doing so will actually help us to avoid negative outcomes. And there are some situations in which vigilance can keep us safe. But I think more often than not, those imagined worst-case scenarios are no more likely to transpire than the outcomes we actually want. And operating from a place of fear just stifles our creativity and holds us back.

I was floored by the first issue of IN BLOOM from @michaelwconrad.bsky.social and @johnjpearson.bsky.social. Reminded me of the feeling I got first diving into Moore’s Swamp Thing run, and Pearson’s beautiful art gives me John Bolton/Dave McKean vibes. Can’t wait to see where it goes.
