I mean also I'm just general-purpose frustrated with about 16 different things today but my point stands. Getting a personal text from a stranger begging for a dollar over the Internet for some guy I've never heard of does not seem like the most effective way to make this happen & engage voters

I get that this is just how "grassroots fundraising" works these days, but seeing like 6 of these from races nfor both parties (??) all over the country is... let's just say it's frustrating.

If I get one more fundraising text that starts with the phrases, "I hate to beg, but can you PLEASE --" I might lose my mind. If you hate to beg, then don't. Also I gave what I could already, so another $1 in the next 4 hours before That Guy goes on stage to stump for someone... not happening.

Watching CONCLAVE & this movie doesn't care one whit that I don't speak Latin. I've got subtitles on, and all English is fully subtitled but all the Latin, Italian, Spanish, etc are not -- nothing so much as a [SPEAKS LATIN]. This is fine, but if it's a choice it's an interesting one

What's the saying? There is no guilt in pleasures.

It's just that accepting the notion that this is some sort of metric of which works are worth time or attention (alongside having to justify enjoying something "despite" its assigned cultural position) makes me tired.

Mind you, I am thrilled to talk about the artistic value of things at "both ends" of this imaginary scale. I'm also happy to talk about why we might place a work at various points on the spectrum.

Will we ever, ever be free of High Art/Low Art discourse? Signs point to no.

No matter what else happens in this godforsaken world, at least we'll always have the guitar bridge of "I'm Not Okay" #MCR

It's always weird to me when people don't seem to get that a movie is good*, in and of itself, as a text, but that the way we in which we *experience* that text may offer different opportunities for enjoyment or engagement, for noticing details, for enjoying how folks around you react

I had a very similar experience the other night while watching DU BARRY WAS A LADY on TCM. There is a performance by The Oxford Boys that is a lead-in to a Tommy Dorsey number -- it's so wild, and a lovely example of MGM variety musical weirdness. And it's nowhere on the Internet!
