One of NASA's twin Mars-bound ESCAPADE spacecraft captured Earth and the Moon from 363K miles (584K km) away. In visible light, both appear as slim crescents. But switch to thermal infrared and it’s a different picture... 1/2
Against black space, Earth appears at left as a thin white-green crescent lit along its right edge. The Moon, slightly smaller and dimmer, sits at upper right as a matching tan crescent lit on the same side. Only a sliver of each world catches sunlight; the rest of both disks is lost in darkness. In infrared, Earth glows with heat represented by warm colors, while the Moon remains mostly dark.

One of the most anomalous locations today was in Cornwall - Camborne broke its previous May record temperature by OVER 5ºC, its June record by OVER 2ºC and just missed out on breaking its all-time maximum temperature record of 30.4ºC from July 2022 by 0.3ºC. Unbelievable.
Spaghetti chart showing Camborne daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1978 to 2026. 47 years of historical data are shown as faint grey lines tracing a notably compressed seasonal cycle typical of a coastal Atlantic station, ranging from around 5°C in winter to roughly 20–22°C in summer. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, tracking near the historical average through winter and spring before spiking sharply upward in late May to reach 30.1°C on 26 May, well above the historical grey envelope. Three dashed reference lines mark the previous May record of 24.5°C set on 5 May 1990, the June record of 27.7°C set on 20 June 2017, and the all-time station record of 30.4°C set on 18 July 2022. The 2026 reading exceeds both the May and June records and comes within 0.3°C of the all-time record, an extraordinary reading for a station rarely exceeding 25°C in May.

Kew Gardens recording 35.1ºC today breaks its previous May record in 1922 before this spell by NEARLY 5ºC and breaks its June maximum temperature record set in 1976 by 0.5ºC - this also beats the previous May UK maximum record by OVER 2ºC (32.8ºC, 1922/44). An incredible anomaly
Spaghetti chart showing Kew and Kew Gardens daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1881 to 2026. 145 years of historical data are shown as faint grey lines tracing the typical seasonal cycle, rising from around 5–10°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, tracking near the historical average through winter and spring before spiking sharply upward in late May to reach 35.1°C on 26 May, well above the top of the entire historical grey envelope. Two dashed reference lines mark the previous Kew May record of 30.3°C set in 1922 and the all-time June record of 34.6°C set on 26 June 1976. The 2026 reading exceeds both, with the annotation noting it as a new Kew May record that also beats the all-time June record.
