#pukapuka Loved this from writer Candice Tutauha, in Stuff’s Your Weekend yesterday. www.thepost.co.nz/culture/3610...
An extract from a Q&A with writer Candice Tutauha. Asked her favourite word, Tutauha replies:
Kaitiakitanga, and my other favourite word is onomatopoeia. Aside from the meanings, the consonant-to-vowel ratio lends both words a languid phonetic balance that rolls off the
tongue. I love that!

#kai And this was lunch: a sunny, summery feast of a carrot and chickpea pancake with more asparagus, avocado, tomato ‘hummus’ and quartered pigeon heart tomatoes. A spot of the old Laoganma on the tomatoes and, ta da!
So this meal is much prettier: an orange-flecked pancake, grilled asparagus, cherry tomatoes, avocado and hummus.

#kai Look, I completely agree: it’s a rather unfortunate looking meal. But looks aren’t everything, and this mess of cannellini beans, leeks and miso in a thyme-scented ricotta and blue cheese sauce (served with roasted cauliflower, grilled asparagus and rye sourdough) was delicious.
Golden brown cauliflower, green asparagus, brown bread and very beige beans.

#nzpol I don’t think NZ Labour understands that ‘could they be any more disappointing?’ is an expression of frustration, not a challenge.

#kai I did have a little fishy, eight in fact, and not so much on a little dishy as on toast with avocado, preserved lemon and black pepper. And they were mighty fine.
Sardines tidily lined up on two pieces of avocado toast. Said toast tidily set upon a plate and accompanied by cherry tomatoes and sliced radish.

Oops, missed my check-ins! Dirty Work by Nicky Hager (bleakly enraging, but less so than the media commentary normalising the TPU’s tactics). The Midnight Market by Joanne Harris (a fairy tale intended as light relief after the TPU’s shitannigans, but ended up a bit cloying).

#kai A hasty, tasty lunch of palak paneer soup and toast with hummus, tomato and chilli, and avocado, sardines and chilli.
A bowl of murky green spiced spinach soup and a plate holding two generously topped pieces of toast , one with hummus and glossy red tomatoes, the other with avocado and sardines. And yes, almost everything is daubed with Laoganma chilli crisp. What of it?

#kai a healthful heap of salad greens, avocado, and tomatoes with kūmara, lime and gochujang braised chicken and black sesame seeds. Also known as Use the Leftovers Salad.
A heap of green leaves, avocado and quartered pigeon heart tomatoes topped with with proper kūmara, braised chicken and a fiery sweet lime and gochujang sauce. Seriously and simply delicious.

#nzpol Why yes, I did snort. Loudly and in public What of it?
Sharon Murdoch’s cartoon in today’s Post. Headlined The Impresario, its first frame shows a caricature of Louise Upston saying she can’t pull money out of thin air to support local performers and events. The second larger frame shiws her surrounded bye a tornado of found shows her surrounded by a tornado of paper money. The first bubble has her saying the money for big overseas acts didn’t come out of thin air. The second bubble says the $40 mill came out the wazoo. I defy you not to snort.

I saw people with three copies, heard of one person buying five. The nice thing though, was that the bus home was full of mainly young people chatting about the launch. We were heading into Wellington Bays, so I guess that’s not a surprise!
