There were two sites that the porcellanite was quarried - on Rathlin Island, off the NE coast of Antrim, and at Tievebulliagh, on the Antrim mainland. Porcellanite axes from these two areas have been found all over Ireland, and further afield. 2/2

I think these are some of the most gorgeous stone axes, and their geology is pretty interesting too. They formed from porcellanite, a metamorphic rock formed from clays that baked in a basalt feeder dike (tube). The clays originally came from weathered (older) basalt. 1/2

A few years ago I was up at Sliabh Liag, enjoying the geology, when I walked around a knoll overlooking the sea to find a little pile of ashes and some very obvious bone (sorry!) at the foot of the rocks I was examining. Can't quite figure out how I feel about it yet tbh

I'll put a shout in for my discipline of geology - you can time-travel when you learn how to 'read' the stories in rocks 😍

Ah yes, I know the area a little, but not in huge geological detail. Had problems finding the andalusite in the aureole of the Ardara granite due to housing etc a few years' ago. There's an interesting site at Rosbeg with an altered schist in the contact zone of a (meta)gabbro.

This figure for diesel has actually surprised me - this is ~€2.17 per litre. That's more or less what we are seeing here in Ireland - and petrol (gas) prices are about the same. Normally there's a huge discrepancy

Where in Donegal were you mapping? Is this a skarn associated with the Donegal Batholith? I've some vesuvianite in a skarn assoc/w the Galway Batholith (Omey Granite). Obvious crystal is ~3cm in length. All the other similarly coloured material is vesuvianite too. +grossular+wollastonite

My stag print (and more!) arrived from @prayforpatrick.bsky.social today. Lovely to come home to a bit of unwrapping of a present for myself after a bit of a day at work. Bit spoiled by the extras too 😍
A framed linocut picture of a stag in black and cream, in a black frame with a cream border. A smaller print of an old Irish stamp in gold on black sits on top of the larger picrure, and there are two small cards. The background is cardboard packaging

If brakes are failing on a truck on a long descent, it's a way to go off the main road and slowing down by going uphill again, without (hopefully) crashing the truck into the barriers, or into other vehicles. Don't have them here in Ireland, but have seen them in the US.

This makes my blood boil, that there's teachers still out there who dare to say things like this to kids. I know there are, I've a teenaged daughter, but so far she's been lucky (apart from one term when she was 7 - and I acknowledge she's privileged too)

Good luck! I had to go back doing citing/referencing this past year for a course and found Zotero useful, in case you're looking for a plug-in (but I guess you're way beyond that!)

That tillite does not look that old at all. Has it not been metamorphosed to any degree? Just curious, as the similar-aged tillites I've seen in the west of Ireland (part of the Port Askaig Fm) are very definitely metamorphic rocks.

Same here, wore contacts all day every day for years, and my ophthalmologist (I've early onset glaucoma so have to go to her as well as the optician) is a woman you obey when she tells you to start wearing glasses more 😄 Ear grip things allow me to look down & shake my head without glasses slipping

DrSadhbh @drsadhbh.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
I couldn't get the arms of my glasses altered comfortably at all - they were either too tight when they were holding my glasses on properly, but giving me sore areas behind my ears, or too loose and slipping. As a very short sighted person, the idea of my glasses slipping off when I'm cycling is 😨

I got these and they are brilliant. make putting the glasses on a bit more awkward but they stay put - so no more slipping down my nose when I'm running, or cycling, and no fear of them dropping off into the water if I look over the side of a boat. www.drjonsgorillagrips.co.uk/product/uk-e...

Ah yes, the marble (stone) vs marble (rock) discussion, which usually crops up when I'm teaching adult learners (not so much with undergrads). I take your line Ruth and discuss the different uses of the word (same for granite, quartz) depending on who is doing the naming.

I take it that is in situ - so really demonstrating how moss is preferentially growing on the phyllite rather than the quartzite. Wish I could make some clever comment about rolling stones and moss but can't come up with one!

I've recently done a couple of basket-weaving workshops. I will probably do more, one a year or something, now that I know I can finish a basket in the day (with help from the instructor), but I will not be buying bundles of willow to start doing it myself as a hobby!

One of the great joys of my professional life has been teaching people coming in as adult learners to 'just' learn about geology and Earth Sciences in general. Some seem to be serial course-takers, and all the better for it. I find it inspirational to have 80 year olds coming on field trips etc.

There is an outcrop of serpentinite on Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo in the W of Ireland. This is where St Patrick is believed to have cast the snakes out of Ireland from. I wonder if the appearance of the rock led to the legend. I like to think it did.

It's a really good book IMO - Conway is an economist who (by his own admission) only ever looked at the prices of commodities without really thinking about the extraction of minerals etc. Book is divided into chapters on Sand, salt, iron, copper, oil and lithium.

There's a great chapter on sand in 'Material World' by Ed Conway. Really opened my eyes, and I thought I was already aware of the finite resource nature of sand.

Are you specifically looking to read fiction? I read a lot more non-fiction that fiction - maybe it's just laziness 😉 but travel and natural history books especially get me hooked in a way that novels generally don't. I don't beat myself up about this, my reading time is mine!
