Does anyone know on RedCap how to set up a "repeating survey" that corresponds to a repeated "data entry form" so that after some time when data is entered the *survey* goes out to an email from the data entry form (but the email changes with each instance)

Hey friends, trying to find a reviewer who could provide a review on an empirical EMA paper focused on emotion regulation. I've had 31 declines so getting a little desperate and feel really bad for the authors. Let me know here or per email (firstnamesecondname@gmail.com)

Can AI feel pain? Reminds me a response to the classic article What is it Like to Be a Bat. Atkins (1993) responded: What is it Like to Be Boring and Myopic. Basically, there's not much room in a bat for it to be like much. AI code has neither the room nor equipment for anything like pain.

The thing that's surprised me most about AI are people's intuitions about what must be true about something that quickly produces words in a plausible order. I suppose it makes sense, in nature we never encounter a word machine without a mind, why would we, they are pretty useless without minds

Honestly I would feel better if candidates had a coffee because then I don't need to worry that they wish they had one. One time a candidate told me later that she couldn't actually drink the tea she accepted from me so I don't even know whether to offer things anymore 🙃

I mostly agree with your critique (as presented here). The trouble is, I struggle to articulate what cross-sectional networks estimate! Once I thought through the contribution of colliders, especially, any attempt to use them simplistically for causal inference of any kind seems hard to justify.

Not a stupid question! Probably several ways this happens. A big one is that people typically avoid the nondangerous thing or (potentially a second thing) minimize contact and exploration of it when it's present. In exposure treatment we ask people to really test: Is this dangerous or safe?

Glad to know it had an impact! It's easiest to show the difficulties with the difference score, but I think there's a broader difficulty that measuring change reliably is difficult, and one must have a good idea when and how change happens to have a hope of managing it.

Tom Rodebaugh @drrodebaugh.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Correction: it's actually the more people go up, the higher they are at the end! (It would actually be a lot better for reliability if higher scores in the middle predicted lower at the end... But that's not what happens)

We hope this paper gets the field thinking more seriously about measuring change over time in exposure sessions. ALSO: This was a paper in a day for the lab! Ultimately it took a lot longer than a day, but starting off with quick progress made all the difference.

All theories of exposure expect divergence, with some people responding better--so either all of those theories are wrong, or we are not measuring the right thing or in the right way--but that's not the difference score's fault. It's unreliable because your theory is at best poorly specified.
McMahon reaction theme with the steps (1) Our theory predicts change over time (2) Let's test it with a difference score (3) Difference scores are often unreliable (4) Unreliability of the difference score is fatal to your theory

Tom Rodebaugh @drrodebaugh.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
A thing people often take away is "difference scores are bad," and I want to push back! Within an exposure, difference scores (so far) haven't worked because the middle/worst part tells you most of what you could learn about change. The more people go up, the more they go down. Little divergence.

We provide a shiny tool to walk through the consequences of measurement choices: habapp.shinyapps.io/ExposureHabi... We don't know whether emotional processing theory is right, or inhibitory learning, or any other theory... But we know we need better measurement in order to actually test them.

The literature has more often shown between-session habituation to predict overall change: We show that between-session habituation is more likely to be reliably estimated (in our data). The literature has jumped to "new theory" without addressing the measurement problem: This won't go well.

Tom Rodebaugh @drrodebaugh.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
We show that: Single item measures are sometimes OKish, but of course multiple items are better. Scores within an exposure often correlate so highly that even multiple-item measures can fail. This issue affects other constructs, so change in threat expectancy can also have this problem.

Tom Rodebaugh @drrodebaugh.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Measuring is hard, measuring change is harder, and most studies have used a simple difference score. This method is intuitive! We want to see change! It also can work well. But if the measurements are (a) individually iffy and (b) correlate highly, it's really challenging to get a reliable score.

We know that purposefully encountering scary but safe stuff (exposure) produces change in anxiety symptoms. Since Foa & Kozak (1986) we've thought maybe change in anxiety during or across exposures would track the key change. But it mostly doesn't! @emmardear.bsky.social led our investigation...

Tom Rodebaugh @drrodebaugh.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
New from my lab! So, you've heard that habituation during exposure doesn't predict overall treatment change. Emotional processing theory must be wrong and we need a new theory. But... what if the measurement of habituation was unreliable? Free for 50 days link: authors.elsevier.com/c/1noIo39qZA...
