I've had the same Altec Lansing speakers on my desk/on my entertainment center since 2005. Due to a fault that makes them cut in and out, i've installed an extra sound bar I had handy. My god, older speakers really do sound lightyears better. I gotta get them fixed.

Just one time in my life I want to do a job interview in the gaming space in which the interviewer asks me a single question about - Design (any) - Writing - Narrative Structure - Game Development - Psychology in Gaming And not... how many Instagram followers I have or what hours I can work.

Storytelling is ancient, and there are so many storytelling traditions that we can use techniques from to be better players and performers. Improv and theatre are not the end all be all for ttrpg storytelling.

i think a lot of #ttrpg enjoyers think the term "cinematic" means bombastic, heightened, loud, or zany. When the INTENTION of the term for RPGs is: Cinematic - Combines mechanics, narrative, pacing, and unpredictability to stimulate a deep emotional response in players and their characters.

Most people tell me when they wake up there's a long period of 'coming out of it' like with Anesthesia. Just like coming out of Anesthesia, I am INSTANTLY the most awake i've ever been when I wake up, usually with fairly complicated stuff on my mind. Not restful going from asleep to LIGHT SPEED

Secondarily - having so many GMs be [so] subtle and [so] guarded/obfuscated with details means that players may habitually look at tiny coincidences or inconsistencies as INTENTIONAL clues or foreshadowing, throwing them WAY off into the weeds. That often causes frustration and confusion.

DropTheDie @dropthedie.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Be more direct. Your subtle worldbuilding hints and suspicions are fantastic for fiction, but not for play. "Something somewhere is doing something to affect the water -hint- in Olvermire!" is worthless. "A dragon has chased all the fishmen from Whitethorn mountain, they've overrun Olvermire!"

Try to make time during your #TTRPG sessions to voice how seriously you're taking the game and how much thought you're putting into your (potentially wacky) decisions. GMs are empowered to hear you're thinking beyond your nose, it makes them more trusting that you're respecting the game and them.

The Dog Stars (2026) Nah. A well-shot movie, Josh Brolin and Guy Pierce were great, Jacob Elordi is a mannequin - but Ridley Scott is plagued by terrible masculine leads. Beautiful scenery can't really salvage the break-neck last quarter of the movie nor the glacial slow first quarter. 5/10 ?
A portrait of two men, taken from the movie poster. In the top right, white text reads 'The Dog Stars." The rightmost man is grizzled with a mop of medium length hair and a mustache and goatee. The leftmost man has black curly hair and a stubble-filled face, with the slack jawed open-mouth expression of someone deeply confused. Both have severe, flat eyebrows.

One thing that's kinda cool about making a TTRPG myself is when playtesters tell me "This seems so good, it's borderline broken" I sometimes get to say "That's as intended" and watch their faces narrow suspiciously I legitimately want every feature/choice/decision to feel extremely potent sometimes

Yeah @themonstersknow.com was right, OUTLIER is pretty much what I enjoy about language. People in the TTRPG sphere know a ton of weird, disused, or archaic words - if you like word games like Wordle or Scrabble, give it a try! playoutlier.com
The scorecard for Outlier that lists my words, a grade of the word, and a red bubble explaining if I was the only person or first person to use a word on a given day. My words are: Mournivals (four of a kind), Bulwarking (build defenses), Yeomanaries (plural of yeomanry), Viceroy, Bulwarked (protected by defensive structures), Cutaneously (through the skin), Unproblematic (not giving issue), Corundum (a type of hard rock), Corundums (multiple types of hardened rocks), and Mucosal (the membrane lining organs and cavities). For a total score of 840 points.

I get "it was a fun [book/movie/show/game] to turn my brain off to" a lot. I'm begging, pleading, imploring those people to engage; to tell me the last thing they did that turned their brain ON so I can gauge how bad their torpidity has become. In the media we consume, SOMETHING has to matter.

I wonder what inspired the new Warlock video game, based on Dungeons and Dragons lore by Wizards of the Coast, to be designed infinitely higher magic than Dungeons and Dragons. No hate, not vitriolic, just legitimately curious. It legitimately feels like 4e gameplay, which I cut my teeth on.

#TTRPG #GMTip of the day: I'd say 90% of the time, you *should* let your party's plan work. Give them 1-2 obstacles, or 1-2 unexpected wrinkles, but if you consistently side-step or undercut the PCs' plans with subversions, you'll completely shred their confidence as players at your table.

I wonder how many TTRPGs actually focus most of their attention on the early game mechanical development instead of late-game development. Feels weird for many games i've played to be the most "boring" and "simple" for the first third of their content when most games don't surpass that content.

Its a core mechanic in the game I'm making. Spellcasters actively avoid one another for fear of the lasting effect their combined spell use could have on a single location.

Late to the party, but Thunderbolts was actually in my top 5 favorite marvel movies. I loved the lower stakes story overcome by something other than a bigger stick. A little too flippant at times, but overall I did legitimately enjoy it. Some of the visuals were quite inspired.

So i started Slay the Spire years late, but I managed to actually 'beat' the spire on my very first run, while playing off and on between design sprints. It was fun, intuitive, and rewarded careful gameplay. Now I'm playing as Spirit (2nd character) and have never had less fun in my entire life.
An image of the overall statistics of my first run. It took 3 hours and 24 minutes, 1 total victory, 0 deaths, with 51 floors climbed, meaning I breezed through the tower on my first attempt.

A thought on Superhero #TTRPG: Most tables will get their best experiences out of games aimed at the Street to Middle levels of power. Past that, things tend to get janky because many superhero TTRPG mechanics struggle with high and epic power levels. Examples of Street to mid level powers... 1/2

for you #TTRPG people who may not know, the rule "Show don't tell" means to let your players make their own supposition about a situation based on concrete details. ❌"She's extremely sad." ✅"She's been crying." ✅"She wipes her tear-streaked face." You have to TELL them, just be more indirect.

Hm... The Odyssey was good, but I legitimately like Troy (2004) more for the Iliad storyline and The Returned (2024) for the return to Ithaca. The Odyssey (1997) miniseries was also hokey and cheap but had much better writing. The Odyssey (2026) was at its BEST during Odysseus' missing 10 years.

#GMTip - Keep each feature descriptions to 30 words or fewer, if you can. Short, evocative sentences leave room for imagination. "The water's... very dark. Cold, and so very dark." P: "Can we see land?" "Almost, you think. Through this thick, greasy fog, it's... You've lost it."

If you're a #ttrpg GM who struggles with players who make increasingly ridiculous joke characters, like "Dicky Ballman" or a librarian who acts like a rabbit... Evaluate how much DOOM and DREAD you put in your game vs LEVITY or HEROISM. The scales demand balance; your players may be doing it.
