🔺 Iran has asked Russia for its newer jet-powered Geran attack drones, specifically the Geran-4 and Geran-5, for use against Israel and the US, the Financial Times reported in mid-September, citing Western security officials and a source close to the Kremlin.

It's a reversal as Russia's Geran drones themselves began as copies of Iran's Shahed, which Tehran supplied in 2022. Iran now wants Russia's upgraded jet versions, which are faster and much harder to shoot down.

A new FT report from Odesa highlights what these drones are capable of in Ukraine. Since July, a Russian air campaign led by jet-powered drones and missiles has closed the Black Sea to shipping, and stranded Ukraine's bumper harvest.

Before the 2022 invasion, those ports shipped more than 90% of Ukraine's grain exports, which fed some 300 million people in about 70 countries, FT reported. Ukraine's agriculture minister estimates losses of at least $8 billion by June 2027 if the ports stay shut, about 20% of last year's total export revenue for the country.

Russia is also hitting electricity substations, warehouses, storage depots, ships and the trains that carry grain and iron ore. "By blocking the grain they maximise economic damage," said Tymur Samosudov, commander of Odesa's drone interceptor unit. His unit claims a 95% success rate against older Shaheds, but hitting the jet-powered versions with interceptor drones is "more luck than anything else," he said.

Neither Moscow nor Tehran has confirmed the Iranian request for the drones. But some reporting suggested Russia was considering the request. The full FT report is linked in reply.

I assume that the Russians are going to start giving Iran supply of Geran 5 drones (they reportedly requested it) or they will start manufacturing an equivalent version themselves which will make it harder to deflect these attacks since no reliable interceptor has yet been designed.Rory Johnston

Hormuz oil flows rose to their highest level of the war and then the number of successful Iranian strikes on Hormuz tankers spiked over the past week, Hormuz flow appearing to slow somewhat. Had heard that even before this latest escalation CENTCOM was regularly intercepting Iranian drones during convoys.

So, some questions:

1. Is Iran launching way more attacks and just by large numbers notching more successful strikes?
2. Is CENTCOM getting worse at defense?
3. Did Tehran never really intend** to hit ships before (say, in line with quiet toll/payment thesis), and suddenly decided it really wanted to (as Saudi ramped, etc.) and still maintained the capacity to do so?
4. Is this all a fluke?

**Why would Tehran *pretend* to threaten ships? Even if some were paying, Tehran would, in line with the attritional strategy, have an interest in keeping overall risk perception (and thus costs) high and CENTCOM completely engaged, which it could do cheaply with some haphazardly lopped drones.

🇮🇷 Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday that negotiations with the U.S. had become “futile,” accusing Washington of repeatedly attacking Iran following talks and seeking to bring down the Islamic Republic.

“Every time we come to the negotiating table, war is immediately imposed upon us,” Pezeshkian said, according to IRNA, adding that the U.S. had attacked Iran three times following negotiations. “This demonstrates that they do not seek dialogue. On the contrary, their goal is to bring down the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The Saudi-backed offensive in Yemen has run aground:

Yesterday the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), in coordination with Saudi Arabia, launched a counteroffensive called "Dawn of Yemen.”

The first major operation of the counteroffensive was a charge by the Southern Giants Brigades about 20 kilometers down the narrow Bab al Mandeb coastal plain, as 100 Royal Saudi Air Force jets bombed hundreds of targets across Yemen. As of today, the Giants Brigades have been stopped somewhere near the Dhubab airport and have been sustaining heavy missile and drone fire from the adjacent mountains.

Since the counteroffensive began yesterday, Ansarallah has published two videos showing large scale ballistic missile operations targeting Giants Brigades reinforcements along the narrow strip of southern Yemeni coast in Ras al-Ara.

Concurrently with the launch of Operation Dawn of Yemen yesterday, Ansarallah completed the encirclement of PLC forces in Taiz city. They’re now attempting to claim the remaining mountains that surround it.

⭕️ Why Norway?

Starlink's satellite network is registered with the UN's International Telecommunication Union (ITU) through Norway, with the US listed as an associated administration. That makes both governments legally responsible for preventing unauthorized transmissions.

Since 2023, the ITU's Radio Regulations Board has repeatedly "strongly urge[d]" Norway and the US to have SpaceX "immediately disable unauthorized transmissions" in Iran. SpaceX can switch off terminals in any country, but neither government has made it do so.

The move, which was not explained, comes days after British authorities arrested several individuals over what the officials have claimed was an Iranian plot targeting the base.

Fairford has served as a forward operating location for U.S. Global Strike Command and hosted B-1 bombers used in the war against Iran.

Satellite imagery from October 5, 2026 of Kfartibnit, Lebanon, shows the extent of the destruction caused by Israeli attacks and controlled demolitions.

65 towns and villages in Lebanon are currently occupied by Israeli forces and are being systematically demolished; civilian homes and infrastructure such as schools, water sources and medical facilities are being razed to the ground on a daily basis.

Genocide is defined under Article Il of the 1948 UN Genocide Convention as any act committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. One of the five acts is "deliberately imposing destructive life conditions."

In Yemen, Ansarallah continue their rapid advances across western Yemen, moving to encircle the city of Taiz and firming up their control control over the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait. As Saudi Arabia reportedly plans a major military offensive against the group with the support of regional countries, Ansar Allah is establishing facts on the ground in their battle to control Yemen.

In Gaza, the Israeli military has continued to carry out strikes killing Palestinian civilians in Gaza—including deadly strikes targeting journalists and members of Gaza’s small Christian community. According to most recent figures, Gaza’s Health Ministry has recorded at least 1,431 Palestinians killed and 5,026 wounded since the October 2025 ceasefire.

In Europe, Moscow has issued a direct warning to NATO, threatening the use of its full military arsenal—including nuclear weapons—if Western operations isolate the militarized exclave of Kaliningrad.

Meanwhile in Iraq, U.S. allies in Iraq feel betrayed by Trump's withdrawal of forces from the country, even as many ordinary Iraqis celebrate the withdrawal.

Despite President Trump’s claims that Iran has lost control of the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran demonstrated this past week that it retains the ability to strike oil shipping, hitting eight tankers in just five days.

🫏 🇺🇸 Democrats lead in three Republican-held Senate seats and are tied or within a point in two more, according to New York Times/Siena polls of five GOP-leaning states published Oct. 3.

➤ Alaska: Mary Peltola (D) 50%, Sen. Dan Sullivan (R) 43%

➤ Texas: James Talarico (D) 51%, Ken Paxton (R) 45%

➤ Ohio: Sherrod Brown (D) 49%, Sen. Jon Husted (R) 46%

➤ Iowa: Ashley Hinson (R) 48%, Josh Turek (D) 47%

➤ Kansas: Adam Hamilton (D) 45%, Sen. Roger Marshall (R) 45%

The polls surveyed 2,946 likely voters from Sept. 21 to Oct. 1. Across the five states, 49% said they want a senator who would check President Trump, versus 27% who want one who supports him.

Separate Siena polls released the previous week showed Abdul El-Sayed (D) leading Mike Rogers (R) by 5 points in Michigan (Sept. 25) and Sen. Susan Collins (R) leading Troy Jackson (D) 49% to 46% in Maine (Sept. 24). Republicans hold a 53-47 majority, so Democrats need a net gain of four seats for control. Results in Ohio, Iowa and Kansas are within the margin of error.InteractivePolls

Ansarallah made a lot of progress in the southwest Taiz front. Al Turbah is getting pinched from both sides (only about 18km across now). They're also only a few kilometers away from the Al-Safiya Junction to the west. AA will soon be close to reaching the last road out of Taiz at three different points.

🇪🇹 The 2022 Pretoria deal that ended the Tigray war left its promises unmet, former CIA analyst and NSC Africa director Cameron Hudson told Drop Site.

The deal excluded Eritrea, which "committed some of the worst crimes of that war," Hudson said. Once it was signed, "we all went our separate ways," and accountability, state reform and credible elections were "largely ignored."

The same grievances drive the new war, he said, but the Tigrayans have "nationalized" it through a seven-group alliance seeking to topple PM Abiy Ahmed.

🚨🎥 “We will finally give them the most basic human right: to honor them and lay them to rest.”

Hundreds gathered in Gaza City on Thursday for the mass funeral of 105 Palestinians killed on October 25, 2023, when Israeli forces dropped at least 20 bombs on the Al-Taj residential block and surrounding buildings in Yarmouk Square.

Nearly three years later, it took Civil Defense crews, aided by Egyptian teams, 20 days of searching and digging through the rubble to recover the remains.

“We were able to recover 105 martyrs: children, women, the elderly, patients, engineers, doctors, nurses, and academics,” Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told Drop Site’s Mohamed Ahmed.

Basal said some 8,000 victims remain beneath destroyed buildings across Gaza and called for the entry of equipment and logistical support needed to recover them. “If things remain as they are, we are talking about many years in which these families will remain beneath the rubble.”

Sumaya Bakhit, who lost 15 members of her family beneath the Al-Taj building, said the remains of three of her brother’s children, ages 9, 5, and 2, were among those finally recovered.

“We have mixed emotions—sorrow, pain, but also joy,” Bakhit said. “The feelings of loss are impossible to describe.”

⭕️🇵🇸 “This is his baby bottle. This is his toy. And that is his shroud. I want to ask the world: What threat did this pose to Israel?”

Nearly three years after the Israeli massacre at the Al-Taj residential block in Gaza City, families gathered Thursday to bury 105 Palestinians whose remains were recovered from beneath the rubble.

Standing amid the ruins, journalist Mahmoud Haniyeh, whose wife, journalist Doaa Sharaf, and their one-year-old son Obaida were killed in the Israeli attack, held up the child’s belongings.

“I am not talking about numbers,” Haniyeh told Drop Site’s Mohamed Ahmed. “There was a neighborhood here, alive with its people. There was a lawyer here, an engineer, a doctor, and a nurse. We are talking about an entire life that Israel obliterated in seconds.”

Haniyeh said his family had spent three years in “an open house of mourning” while waiting for their remains to be recovered. “This grief has not healed. This wound has not healed. This mourning has not ended.”

For Haniyeh, the recovery of his wife and son underscored how many families across Gaza are still waiting for the bodies of their loved ones to be recovered from beneath the rubble.

“There are 10,000 martyrs whose families are waiting for this moment,” he said. “How long will it take us to reach 10,000?”

Drop Site contributor Ali Younes, a Jordanian-American journalist, was detained by Jordanian intelligence in August over a repost of an article questioning U.S. aid to Jordan. He was later charged with undermining national security, sedition, and hate crimes under Jordan's Cybercrime Law, and barred from leaving the country for a month.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen called the Jordanian government, after which Younes was allowed to leave the country, and Jordan told Van Hollen the charges had been dropped.

Younes, however, was never informed of this, and it turns out that claim contradicted what Jordan had told him.
Drop Site's Julian Andreone asked Van Hollen for any updates, and what he makes of Jordan contradicting its own account.

Andreone also asked about the Senate's failure to pass Van Hollen's resolution demanding accountability for Americans killed in the occupied West Bank.

The resolution failed 47-53. Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against it, while Sen. Rand Paul was the only Republican who crossed over to vote in favor.

In the opening hours of the war against Iran, on February 28, 2026, the U.S. military fired Tomahawk cruise missiles directly at a school in the southern city of Minab. At least 156 people were killed that morning at Shajareh Tayyebeh school—120 of them were children and 26 were teachers.

It will go down in history as one of the gravest war crimes committed by the U.S. government since Vietnam.

Drop Site News conducted a two-month investigation into the strike, speaking with survivors, first responders, parents, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and other witnesses. Some of them had never before shared their experiences of that day. This is their story.

Please know that this media framing of Yemeni civilians killed by Saudi & its allies isn't new.

From the start of the war in 2015:

DAY ONE (3/26/15): "Houthi-run health ministry"

@Reuters
 Day 4: "Houthi-controlled health ministry"

This is propaganda, not reporting.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 US-IRAN NEGOTIATIONS LATEST

🔸President Trump said Monday his team spoke with mediators working to end the war with Iran, but offered no details. "We're going to win. As far as I'm concerned, it's going to be one way or the other. It's going to go pretty quickly," he told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that more strikes before the midterms were also "possible."

🔸 Hours later, Trump denied an Axios report, citing a US official, that he was willing to offer Iran sanctions relief and frozen funds for "concrete progress on nuclear." "I offered them NOTHING!" he wrote, calling the story a "HOAX."

🔸 Despite his public rejection of Iran's seven-day plan, the US has not formally rejected it, three officials told the AP. Mediators are drafting a deal to reopen Hormuz, lift the US blockade, and then remove sanctions. One official told the AP the US is seeking nuclear concessions, including access for inspectors, which Axios has also reported.

🔸 Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met a Qatari mediator in New York on Monday. "They had some ideas, and we held discussions that they will also raise with the US side," he told state news agency IRNA, adding he hoped for Washington's final response by Tuesday. He flew back to Tehran rather than wait: "The Qataris know how to reach us whenever they have the response."

🌽 Iowa Senate candidate Ashley Hinson reaches new levels of Iran war incoherence:

🔹At a press conference in Iowa this weekend, Rep. Ashley Hinson said she texted House Speaker Mike Johnson urging him to call the House back into session for a "resolution to end the war" with Iran, but not another war powers resolution, which she has voted against four times.

🔹"We don't need another resolution on the House floor," Hinson said. "We need a resolution to end the war as quickly as possible and the president can do that."

🔹 Hinson joined Trump in the Oval Office on Monday as he announced a Minnesota company's plan to build a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa. 🎥👇

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrapped up her upstate New York tour in Syracuse on Monday, meeting Mayor Sharon Owens and local Democratic and Working Families Party members on how to get infrequent voters to the polls, per CNY Central.

The swing also took her to Buffalo and Ithaca, where she held a packed "Students vs. Billionaires" town hall at Cornell, and campaigned with battleground Rep. Josh Riley.

New York "has become increasingly relevant to whether we have a majority or not in the House," she told The New York Times. The tour has also fueled speculation about a 2028 Senate or Presidential run. "I love Syracuse," the Bronx native told reporters.

🇵🇸 Palestinian-American journalist and Drop Site contributor Naqaa Hamed has been freed on bail after 13 days in Israeli detention. She was arrested September 15 at a checkpoint near Bethlehem while returning from a reporting assignment on settler violence. An Israeli military court released her on 8,000 shekels bail, her lawyer told AFP.

The Committee to Protect Journalists had previously condemned the "unsubstantiated espionage allegations" against her. Israel still holds 36 Palestinian journalists, the Palestinian Prisoners' Society reports.

Presidential elections in Brazil will take place this Sunday with Flavio Bolsonaro (son of imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro) in a tight race against incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has received support from the U.S. president who welcomed him in the Oval Office only days after receiving Lula. He has been courting a Trump endorsement. According to reporting by The New York Times, leaked documents written by an ally of Bolsonaro suggest that people close to the candidate may have proposed giving the United States access to Brazil’s critical minerals in exchange for support.

The U.S. has supported the region's growing list of autocrats, many of whom themselves face credible accusations of ties to drug traffickers. In Bolivia, President Rodrigo Paz was forced to try to publicly distance himself from former top aide Fernando Cerimedo after he was arrested in connection with the attempted assasination of his former romantic partner; Cerimedo was subsequently hit with drug trafficking charges.
