Just cancelled 3 video streaming subscriptions. Don't have time to be watching TV, makes no sense to keep the subscriptions.

Horrible results from coding with Sonnet today. Lesson: commit more frequently.

I'm halfway through a 2-hour leadership townhall session and I can't stop thinking about how disconnected I feel both from the C-level people talking, but also from their overall discourse and "direction". It's all full of corporate jargon, it's unnatural and even cringe.

David @drodol.com · 06/01/2025

Nice progress with just 1 article published! Lots of more SEO improvements are cooking already 🧑‍🍳

Just solved an issue that had been nagging me with the Rails port of jobsinenglish. (Not anything to do with Rails). Sometimes sharing your progress (or lack thereof) with others, can help you in ways you didn't even think was possible simply by sharing. Thank you, mate!

I enrolled in a mobile phone repair course which I'll take by the end of January. I have a bunch of devices (iPhones and iPads) at home I want to bring back to life. Also, I want to be able to figure out how to fix my electronics, so that's a first step towards that.

passkeys.directory is a cool directory made by the good people over at @1password.bsky.social. It is a collection of sites that support passkeys!

I thought I'd be relentlessly coding after taking a break from my day job, but with family visiting + friends during holidays, progress has been slow. However, I have managed to make very interesting progress with porting jobsinenglish.dk to Rails 8.

David @drodol.com · 26/12/2024

I've been really enjoying the simplicity and the "it just works" feeling that Rails 8 has been giving me. It is such a pleasure to use. I might just have found the keeper.

The family chat where some shame you or simply talk down on you because you don't find drinking to oblivion appealing.

Trying to deploy the RoR app I made in the last couple of days to my server using @coolify.io Deployment was successful but I am still getting a 404. I've checked everything I can think of, but still no luck. I've messaged support for help, so now I'll wait and focus on something else.

Damn, I'm falling in love... with Rails 😲

I've have the "frontend" almost done. I also have integrated Stripe -first thing I did, actually (I'm learning). I coded the ability to manually add jobs via a nice admin dashboard Windsurf built for me. I am leaving the scraping bit until the end. I am doing things very differently than before!

David @drodol.com · 18/12/2024

I've been playing again with Windsurf and the idea of rebuilding jobsinenglish.dk fully from the ground up. After leaving behind the idea of using Nextjs, I thought why not try Rails 8, like the cool kids 👀 @poppacalypse.bsky.social I marvel at how much I've been able to achieve in so little time

It is the end of 2024. Nordea, a bank in Denmark, requires me to fill out a Word document (which includes dynamic content that can only be viewed by having Word installed, which I do not have on Mac), to process an international transfer for which they have functionality in their app. Ridiculous.

David @drodol.com · 15/12/2024

-2 degrees Celsius as I walked the dod this morning. Ouch.

I so need a break.

David @drodol.com · 10/12/2024

I'm running an experiment 🔬 I'll be documenting everything in my blog, but I'll post smaller updates here. I am almost done with my private Django boilerplate, but had an idea yesterday: What would it actually take to build an MVP in say, Nextjs (which I know nothing about) with Ai (Windsurf) 🥸

250

David @drodol.com · 10/12/2024

Fresh NextJS installation. I run: npm run dev I get an error. Stuff can't run. Really?

David @drodol.com · 09/12/2024

I solved a code issue that had been eating me alive for a while. This is an old project, and I had forgotten I had to run a script that would minify the css, which is what's used in prod 🤦‍♂️ So stupid. Be nice to yourself and document your code. Your future self will thank you.

I have no energy/willpower left for what's left of today. Don't know what happened. Don't know what sucked it all away. Glad I could reschedule a meeting I had in the afternoon until tomorrow. I hate it when this happens.

David @drodol.com · 09/12/2024

I made a lot of progress yesterday in creating my own Django "boilerplate". I will flesh out a few things more, and then give it a few tests.

Signed up to coolify cloud today. Should have done that a while back. I'll be self-hosting cool open source projects with my VPS. Thanks @heyandras.dev

I am very tempted to completely rebuild my two projects (for several reasons). Those projects are built with Django, but setups are different. I wonder if I should stick with it (what I kind of know) vs. Try something else. I'm looking for dev speed, simplicity and familiarity.

David @drodol.com · 06/12/2024

I came back last night from my 2-day work trip to Denmark. I worked a lot, saw old friends, and was really cold because I forgot to bring a hat for my bald head. I am looking forward to going next month, for a bit longer this time, and seeing if I can meet @poyashad.bsky.social and @mjwhansen.com

I am all for AI. But if you are applying to a job, please don't just copy-paste text directly from the LLM into the job application. For me, it's an instant disqualification. I am talking about stuff like: "...here's a concise 900-word version..." or "I am happy to apply to [insert company name]"

Finally added a Submit form to saasboilerplates.dev so ppl can submit their boilerplates easily. All are welcome - free or premium. I was adamant on discovering tools myself through serendipity, but my frand bsky.app/profile/tsanlis.bsky.social convinced me otherwise.

A day for home improvement projects. Put up curtains, made holes in walls, cleaned up, and stayed away from screens until now. Felt good.

There is something happening with Django, Tailwind and Docker. Local dev on one of my apps works fine, deploying to staging via render doesn't render css properly. Local dev using docker for another doesn't even compile css. The tailwind container keeps restarting. I have not touched anything 🫠

what are you using these days for both marketing and transactional emails? I want something that’s reliable affordable and has good documentation.

Ooooooooooohhhhh Windsurf just got images!

A screenshot of Windsurf, Ai code editor, and its latest changelog, showing they support image upload.

I finally fixed many SEO issues with jobsinenglish.dk How long it will take for it to take effect and for me to see changes? There are still a ton of things to improve, but this was long overdue. What I learned? Be mindful of new apps in `settings.py` and verifying whether migrations are affected

I want to do a full revamp of the scraper for jobsinenglish.dk. I'll add more sources, improve job post content, and in turn have more jobs.
