Damian Lillard had surgery on his Achilles on May 2nd. The NBA RTP timeline typically lands ~ 10-12 months post-surgery. Most (not all..i.e.Durant) players have some performance drop. So if he joins the Warriors, he could theoretically be playing in March / April. #DubNation

3. Style of play in today's NBA: The game is physically taxing in a different way than year's past. Players are significantly more explosive and agile than in the past. Larger and larger players are expected to play like guards. As a result, soft tissues are stressed unlike in year's past

grade 1 hamstring strain is positive news for Warriors fans and #DubNation  . A grade 1 sprain = microscopic tearing which is much better than the more significant tearing that occurs with a 2 or 3. How he responds to treatment & the MRI specifics will likely determine his RTP with the medical staff

2. Return to play is determined by grade (grade 1 = micro tear, grade 2 = partial tear, grade 3 = complete tear), location (muscle belly is better than higher up in the leg), number of hamstring muscles involved, cross sectional area involved, and degree of fluid / swelling.

Quick 🧵on hamstring strains for #DubNation re: the Stephen Curry news. 1. Important thing to understand is that a "strain" is some degree of tearing of the hamstring muscle.

There are multiple modalities that can be used to control pain / swelling as well as provide external stability (i.e. tape).
050
Dr Nirav Pandya @drniravpandya.bsky.social · 02/05/2025
A player also needs a stable joint to be able to grip / grasp objects which in turn makes function (i.e. dribbling / shooting) difficult on top of pain. Repetitive contact can also irritate the joint if it has a baseline level of irritation.
260
Dr Nirav Pandya @drniravpandya.bsky.social · 02/05/2025
When these ligaments are injured, the joint can become unstable which can lead to pain / swelling as the joint has to move beyond it's normal range of motion which irritates the joint.
140
Dr Nirav Pandya @drniravpandya.bsky.social · 02/05/2025
In the absence of a fracture of a bone, the most typical injury to the thumb in basketball players is to one of the ligaments that help to stabilize the joint.
140

Quick 🧵 on Curry's thumb for #DubNation (of note the Warriors have not stated specifically what the exact injury is so this is more general Swelling of a joint in general typically occurs due an injury to one of the major structures of the joint particulary bone, cartilage, ligaments, or tendons.
