It was a great pleasure to present my working paper on Nuclear Coercion and Non-State Actors at our FGV RI Research Seminar last Friday, alongside presentations by Rafael Mesquita (UFPE) and Yixian Sun (Bath). Friendly and thoughtful feedback from a group of engaging colleagues.

BTW, I'll start signing off all my letter and e-mails with "yours in the struggle". It's a great one.

Archival research is a tough, and sometimes disheartening job. However it is never never uninteresting: at the Historical Papers Research Archive, in Johannesburg, I got to see handwritten letters by Mandela and Zuma. As a bonus, they have the the coolest reading room ever, and great staff!

The discussions left me optimistic about the prospects for enhanced naval, security, and scientific collaboration between Brazil and Canada, not only in Antarctica but also in broader contexts. I look forward to the future possibilities!

It was a privilege to engage in insightful discussions with experts from various fields, facilitated by the hospitality of the Canadian Embassy and the crew of HMCS Margaret Brooke.

On the way to victory, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) integrated governance as part of its broader strategy and used its governance to signal ideas about its post-war commitments to the international community, which is very common among rebel groups: edition.cnn.com/2024/12/06/w...

Library stacks at the University of Michigan. These places are enchanted spaces and I love them. It's here that you'll find the old, forbidden, forgotten, dusty books of trouble, rebellion, resistance, and knowledge. This place doesn't care about bestsellers, face-out displays, etc.

a couple of people have asked what the point of having UN peacekeepers on the ground to just be sitting ducks, and I just want to note this is actually in part the purpose they're supposed to sere: their *presence* is supposed to deter violence because you're not supposed to *want* to target them

Melville follows with: "By this, he seemed to mean, not only that the most reliable and useful courage was that which arises from the fair estimation of the encountered peril, but that an utterly fearless man is a far more dangerous comrade than a coward."

British airports are the only (non-party related) places where it is not only consistently OK to - but rather where one is generally expected to - drink beer at six in the morning. It feels a tiny bit like being at a parallel universe. Mallorca is where the heart is, I guess.

If there's one thing that is shared by the entire mankind, regardless of culture or place is the utter desperation to get out of a plane once it pulls into the gate. Someone should study its unifying power.

The power of sharing a meal with someone else is grossly underrated. Especially if there's some cultural dimension to it, and even more if it also involves the individuals cooking to each other. Food is one of the best ways of showing you care, of showing you dare to understand.

I guess society was/is not ready for the advent of videocalls over 4G/5G on mobile phones. It is surprising we thought we would, because we also proved not to be ready for the advent of powerful speakers built into mobile phones.
