Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• Gaelic is a heritage language of 6 million Scottish Canadians today, the third-largest ethnic group in Canada;
• Scottish settlers and immigrants have contributed significantly to Canada’s history, politics, and culture, but their Gaelic language was erased from history books and shamefully suppressed, with children beaten and punished for speaking Gaelic in school; and
• Gaelic publishing has taken place in Canada for nearly 200 years, but Gaelic publishers can’t access the federal publisher funding they need to survive as Canadian minority-language publishers.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to change the eligibility criteria for publisher support grants from the Department of Canadian Heritage so that Gaelic book publishers in Canada will no longer fall through the cracks of federal publisher funding.

My photo shows a blue spherical bead in the form of a hedgehog curled up in a defensive ball displayed on a grey background. It is made of Egyptian faience, a ceramic material with a shiny blue glaze. The hedgehog’s face, ears, feet and tail are shown in relief, and the quills are represented by black dots painted over the surface of the bead. A hole for threading runs through the sphere - it can just be seen on the right hand side of the bead. The hedgehog’s long ears suggest this is a desert hedgehog. Desert hedgehogs may have symbolized rebirth because they reappear after hibernating underground in winter. Dated c.1985 - 1650 BC. On display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

About 20 years ago I paid USD $40,000 for 4 years of daycare & preschool. I was a professor & it was ~17% of my gross salary. No grandparent support; nobody’s fault, life happened. I literally couldn’t afford to have a 2nd kid.

…”Tracing family history tends to be a very unreliable art, the further back in time we go,“ Dr Esther Mijers, senior lecturer in Scottish history at the University of Edinburgh, said.

“It relies on the survival of records, which get lost for a variety of reasons, or often weren’t even there to begin with. Moreover, names get mangled or changed on purpose, and often so do the details of where one came from.“

Regardless of the truth of his ancestry, the reality is that Vance is “100% American“, according to Emily McEwan, a Scottish Gaelic author and anthropologist.

She said that an “incredible mix and diversity of peoples” had formed the Appalachian culture to which Vance claims to belong, rather than any single group.

“Vance is projecting romanticised cultural values onto ‘the Scots-Irish’ that could really belong to any ethnic group in Appalachia. He’s just cherry-picked that group to serve a political narrative.

“As an anthropologist, I would say that it’s a fundamentally human trait to tell stories about who we are and where we came from. And all genealogy is inherently political.“
