Heading into work on the national express today. Coach driver comes over the intercom and politely but firmly says 'Can the passenger using the loud speaker please turn it off and use headphones. This is a condition of carriage.' Speaker has been turned off. I'm tempted to give the driver a tip!

I went to see Project Hail Mary, based on a recommendation from one of my students. From the first contact scene onwards, I cried, and cried, and cried, and cried. And then I cried some more. This was genuinely funny and genuinely moving. And it looked great too.

I've just horrified my lovely beauty therapist by describing a PhD Viva, and a PhD. As I was doing this, it dawned on me that PhDs are, indeed, quite bonkers, full-on things and why would ANYONE actually sign up to do it??
