Ted Lasso. It’s such a good first series and then veers so sharply into turgid mawkishness. It hits a low point in the S2 Christmas episode it barely rises from at all after that point.

Buffy is in a class of its own. Thinking about the metaphor, I thought Being Human did a very good job of ‘young adulthood as horror movie’, better than Buffy’s later seasons in terms of relatability (maybe because it played so hard on crap Britishness).

As it happens the new one of these is published tomorrow! Black Shuck is of course once again included, though personally I’ve got high hopes for my Enfield spread scoring some lifelong mental scars 😁 usborne.com/gb/strange-a...

There's a silly line (I mean they're all silly) in the Mighty Boosh radio series that got stuck in my head: 'Pedro had a dream... a dream for a zoo as big... as a house'. And I find myself reading all these breathless reports in that cadence. 'A dream for a machine even faster... than a man 😮'

That was largely Waterstones' doing, but weirdly they've now became a kind of wolf-turned-sheepdog for indies. Its the only actual bookshop with enough buying power to counterbalance Amazon and the supermarkets and push terms with publishers that indies can also afford.

Me too but there’s a reason most such podcasts are from freelancers or the higher-ups of (small) companies I guess… employees are in a far dodgier position discussing their work or even offering industry opinions publicly/commercially

And I think lots of people have the sense that it’s possible to have way too much money where it becomes its own source of unhappiness and $1 bill is definitely way past that point. £1 mill or flip for £5 million is probably the harder question!

It’s impressive how they’re attempting to spin people’s hostility to AI as a skills issue. Isn’t the entire point of it that it takes no skills?

I don’t want dismiss any comedians’ apparent sudden passion for children’s fiction unfairly so I have a test… if I’ve seen them post even once about a kids’ book that wasn’t their own, a celeb mate’s, or a classic from their own childhood, I’d consider their book. None of them’s ever passed it.

Sometimes cleverness even detracts from the more important purposes like clear communication to new audiences. So if you see a real functioning piece of design that’s a really clean pun, it feels much more unusual and exciting that it’s got through.

I think it’s like the difference between writing an apposite tweet and writing a novel. Design students are always coming up with clever visual pun logos, posters, book covers etc. But ‘clever’ is just one of many things a working design needs to be.

Composition is invisible if done well... and if done badly the layman often can't point to things like layout visual hierarchy etc as the reason why what they're looking at doesn't work.

My favourite film in this genre is going to what was once Television Centre on Google street view and wondering the corridors of a place that has been gone for 13 years. The bit where you find the offices dressed in 60s gear for filming that creation-of-Doctor-Who drama is really well done

It’s a funny one. Continental Europe loves tinned sardines, they’re especially popular in Italy and France, usually the countries from whom Britain and America gets their ideas of ‘classiness’ in food. I guess it’s just their sheer cheapness that gets them looked down on.

Ha I remember the director talking about that balance… how you kind of have to fight a bit to keep the silly stuff in because it’s not doing anything functional but it’s also the actual thing the movie is for!
