Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 11/10/2026I would agree! Fortunately, the next book in publication order is The Player of Games, which is one of my favorites. If that one doesn't grab you, he may not be your cup of tea. 010 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 11/10/2026I adore Banks and the Culture novels, but Phlebas is not my favorite by a pretty wide margin. 110 0

Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Battersea Power Station is the one on the cover of Pink Floyd's album Animals. Tower Bridge isn't a rock landmark, it's just cool. 011 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Tower Bridge! Do the tour and go inside it. Then take a boat up the Thames to Battersea Power Station, which is impressively ginormous. It's also a nice way to appreciate lots of architecture. (Tho maybe less so if the weather is awful...) 110 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Write down the steps in alphabetical order, then start with the second-biggest one in the first third of the alphabet. That's not based on anything, just offering a random suggestion in case it's one of those where you need some external direction to get going. 010 0

Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 23/08/2026An interesting form of augury, much like bibliomancy. The question is, do you get to pick the channel as part of the query, or is it fixed? And if fixed, would it only work with TCM, or is it based on the querent? Or is it whatever channel comes up? 110 0

Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 21/08/2026I do the same. Is it *logical* that hitting 88 feels like significantly less effort than hitting 1-3-0 or even 9-0? No. Nevertheless, it feels like a lot less effort. 000 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Thumbs up! I am down with that. (Gosh it's refreshing to see someone online willing to course-correct rather than double down on a misstep. You're a mensch, Mr. Nome.) 040 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Our projections aren't perfect, but people need to make decisions NOW, and in the absence of our imperfect data, they won't not make the decisions, they'll just make them without any data at all. Sometimes you have to go with a harm reduction stance, and not let perfect be the enemy of good. 020 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 14/08/2026I make data about climate change usable by non-scientists for impacts and adaptation. We thought long and hard about the problem of misuse and concluded there's no way for us to prevent people from doing stupid things with our data. We can only make it easier to for them to do smart things. 120 0
Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 14/08/2026"CANNOT be used incorrectly" is overreaching. "Think about and try to prevent misuse" is a moral obligation, but "impossible to misuse" is frequently impossible to design. Can you design a car that's impossible to crash? A medication that cannot be overdosed? An oven that never burns? 460 0

Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 25/07/2026Normally I like the way my neurodivergence works and don't experience it as a disability, but earlier today there was Too Much All At Once and my brain did a meltdown/shutdown thing. Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 11/07/20264-6. 1-3 swords is an interest. 7+ is a special interest. 4-6 is an unwillingness to commit. Beemer Tectonic @dr-tectonic.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Not mine, but friends worked on a game where the entire premise was based around the punny name ("Kart Attack" -- you're racing a go-kart, but if you go too fast your heart stops), so when management changed the name (to "Pulse Racer"), it went from wacky fun to making no sense at all. 020 0
