Plucked this bit out a thread on AI because it’s a perfect example of a really frequent narrative: 1. That AI can be bad for one sector/type of work but is probably still great for another and 2. Medicine - or ‘cures’ as the thing AI can magically speed us toward.

But there's a difference between a corporation using Al to replace artists and a scientist using it to cure cancer

I would really heartily encourage people to check out the white supremacy framework. Culture is what we don’t have at home… lots on that framework about urgency, resisting/suppressing tension, authority focused on their own discomfort #CampDigital

This is important. Book bans aren‘t only (even? ever?) about preventing exposure to difference, they’re about taking away often the sole source of comfort and feeling of community for kids who know they’re different. Utterly horrified this is happening in UK, let alone up the road in Manchester.

Sometimes people use "respect" to mean "treating someone like a person" and sometimes they use
"respect" to mean "treating someone like an authority"
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say "if you won't respect me I won't respect you" and they mean "if you won't treat me like an authority I won't treat you like a person"
and they think they're being fair but they aren't, and it's not okay.

oof - latest Full Fact newsletter written by someone having to leave because of Google pulling funding.

Some news This has had a very personal impact over the last month, with the organisation having to let some colleagues, including myself,
go. It might seem odd that I wanted to write this email, but it is because I believe passionately in what Full Fact does and want to leave it in the strongest possible
position.
One final favour I think Google's decision is influenced by
the perceived need to please the current US administration, feeding the harmful new narrative that attacks fact checking and all it stands for. Fact checking has never seen a threat like this.
