I enjoyed joining @michaelpetrilli.bsky.social to discuss the new mythologies of higher education. Net tuition is not soaring, the value of a degree is not plummeting and neither is four-year college enrollment. educationgadflyshow.substack.com/p/is-the-col...

🚨There is a lot of policy movement to expand career & technical Ed but little evidence of what to expect from such expansion. Our WP provides evidence from MA on take up & ➕impacts in the first 5 yrs after HS. #cte

Fair. And, the thing I like about the word evidence, even when causation is applied in defensible ways, is that it is still be distinct from the notion of truth. Our evidence might still just be the shadows on the wall, even if we think they are accurate depictions of what projects them

Shaun M. Dougherty @doughesm.bsky.social · 14/08/2025
Not enough defenders of evidence these days, nor acknowledgements that evidence can reflect some objective truth but need not reflect preferences or priorities.

Shaun M. Dougherty @doughesm.bsky.social · 13/08/2025
In defense of evidence - if there ever is a double blind rct showing benefits, I still firmly defend that preferences do not have to be lead by evidence for things in the beverage realm

In the meantime, we need to help people pursue a range of education and training, to avoid experiencing poverty, and to honor their humanity and desire to love productive lives.

Still, we should also recognize that employment needs and demand continue to evolve, and getting more and new training will be necessary for most people over their working lives. I wait for the day that skilled trades workers get the same respect as lawyers.

The fact is, college pays off for many people. So much so that it offers a net benefit on average. Still, there is no reason to place more social value on work that requires college training, and that's what seems is at the heart of what this argument gets right.

I appreciate this op-ed is staking out a position that honors a broader range of work than only occupations that require a college degree. It shouldn't be necessary, but it has been long in coming. However, we all suffer if we pretend to live in an either-or world. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/06/o...

If you have research dependent on these data here is my suggestion 1/N Big picture: Create a dataset of cell means (cells must be big enough to pass disclosure) - load these cell means into many, many tables & put through review -These cell means can then be used in OLS - which runs on means
