I did yeah. It was good. I watched it right after the first British one and that was just a hard act to follow, and also seemed similar in terms of the pedigree and cultural significance of the winner. But I liked it. The only one that disappointed me was the Irish one 😬 Aisling Bea was tops though.

The British ones are the funniest, Australia's was the most unhinged, Norway's made me wanna move there.

I've been binging on that Last One Laughing show for all the countries, and the thing I didn't expect at all was to deeply understand the status of women in each country. Norway's was something to behold. I felt robbed of not living in a society like that.

For what it's worth, when people talk about AGI, they're talking about capability emulation, not brain processes. Today's AI can do some things that are better than what humans are capable of (eg fluency in most languages), but that doesn't qualify it as a being.

Question to indies who do personal projects or develop in a public way: are there spaces where you post dev progress, builds, get feedback from players/devs etc? I'm thinking of that place Lucas Pope used for his stuff. I'm curious if there's something low-key and not toxic that has life.

I actually trust you on that. But POV as a bystander, she did seem genuinely hostile given the topic, her disagreement and the historical use of QTs to bully or slam people (some social platforms refuse to implement the feature exactly for that reason). So I fully understand the OP's bad feelings.

You're right about that. The tech is going to reflect those who make it more than those who fund it, even if the reputation is established by the public face for the time being. After a while, though, it is going to reflect the people who use it the most (and that's what I'm worried about).

I think the perception is that it's right-coded, but everyone I personally know who works on it is an ardent leftist.

Boy is it bad that this is happening in a new wave in Silicon Valley. This shit is very familiar to many women trying to be serious professionals in early 2000s game industry especially when e.g. every major BUSINESS convention had scantily-clad booth babes as set dressing at nearly every stop.

Yeah, I get that. I wouldn't equate generated artifacts with artistic expression, tho. I think it's more of a craft competency thing. You can run some models that are 6 months behind frontier models on a consumer machine. It is absolutely cheaper and more efficient at inference. Just not to train.

Well, give it a year or two. But even once they're consistently impressing even the hardened skeptics, those things still won't be thinking.

I was delighted that Sparks went to see them in 1964 and cited it as deeply formative. Hard Day's Night is a flawless record (also decent film). Their pop era is underrated.

You know what, I’m going to defend this post. No, it’s not some secret knowledge. But there absolutely were decades of music critics like Lester Bangs jumping through hoops to erase or downplay that part of the Beatles. They did not want it to be For Girls and wouldn’t admit girls got there first.

See, I would have thought that this is where LLMs have genuinely triumphed. They can assume a perspective and give you a different read, they can draw from unrelated domains to synthesize a response. Translate from verbal to visual. But how it's achieved is no different from Searle's setup.

They "reason" in the sense that they show their work via digital artifacts: they show traces for how they got from one point to the next, so to speak. They arrive at often superior, more thorough, more correct answers in much less time than us, but not through thinking, except as distant analogy.

At one point you approvingly quoted someone saying that maybe next-token-prediction is what the brain does, though. Even granting the neural net inspiration, treating statistical text sampling as equivalent to biological cognition misses some pretty foundational distinctions.

Framing it as, "either you admit this software is truly thinking, or you’re a primitive mystic who believes humans have magic souls" is unserious. Will, you reach a lot of people and this kind of thing is misinformation that fundamentally confuses the public about what computers actually do.

I'm not accusing you of not knowing the trick, friend. I don't know why you're getting so harsh with me. I personally like Will and follow him, so I was engaging with him in good faith and with you also. Not sure why you're taking everything personally.

I've said that this line refers to emulation of human thinking. He's commenting on an internal process of a black box when he can only see the input and output. I say there's a trick inside the box and the reply is "but what's the difference?" For those who get the trick, there's a difference.

Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I'm trying to say we're talking about a difficult version of the problem when we haven't even solved the simple version. We have no way of measuring it. For some, it's about how convincing the emulation is. For others, creating similar output is enough. But it's not the same as thinking at its core.
131
Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Because it's being compared to the human thing. Proper emulation of thinking as humans have it is not the same thing as the original. There are plenty of papers out there pointing at the differences in VLM "perception" of images, for example. People work on capabilities to bridge those gaps.
110
Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
How about: it's like we're arguing about the distance between here and the sun but have not yet invented a unit of measurement, far less radio telemetry. We have solid emulation for creating certain digital artifacts. We have a plan for emulating other things. But is that the same as the real thing?
121
Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Thinking implies mental experience and we can't measure it. My job has for many years been to build systems that can reliably convince people they're seeing correct emulation of thinking. But the success of that work says nothing about the underlying system. Until we can measure ME, we cannot know.
100
Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Thinking implies a mental experience. Emulating what human thinking produces does not mean the thing has it, or even an analog of that. However, it's difficult to say one way or the other when we don't know how to measure mental experience.
010
Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Yeah, I wonder whether that was popularized by the Turing Test, Chinese Room Argument and the like in 20th century philosophy. The mechanism behind mental experience remains unknown, and until we know how that works, I'm going to be skeptical of the "machines really think" type stuff. (I work w/ AI)
320
Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Well, that stuff is "teachable" to an AI and there are robotics sensors that get data about physics. The argument is usually, "if the end result is no different, what actually separates it that is MEANINGFUL." I personally don't believe AI has mental experience, but we have no way to measure that.

Anna Kipnis 🇺🇦 @doubleanna.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Will, please stop. I've worked with AI for over 20 years. First with game AI, then with ML for the last 8 and today's AI is legit incredible to behold, but you are honestly being tricked by a similar smoke and mirrors that NPCs have, though the technology is considerably more sophisticated now.

It looks magical, but a stateless text predictor only simulates thought thanks to classic software scaffolding: stop tokens, turn templates, context cache, and tool orchestration. "Chain of Thought" is just scratchpad tokens emitted to bias the next probability distribution. Thought analog at best.

Lol you're out of your mind. The best food in Britain is sourced from elsewhere (eg India, France). CPH's restaurants take top spots regularly (Noma). Figured when I'd move here from CA I'd never eat poke, Korean bbq, hot pot or dim sum again, turns out they're everywhere! Best bakeries too (Hart)
