another issue with the nikole hannah-jones article is everyone saying you can't solve systemic issues with individual choice. but if all well-off families sent their kids to their neighborhood schools, those schools would be a lot different. part of the problem was NHJ was the only one to do it.

my thoughts on the nikole hannah-jones article are that i think it's pretty weird that she makes her SIXTEEN year old daughter call her DURING the school day, but also didn't know she couldn't do long division when she got to high school? seems like she is helicoptering the wrong part of parenting.

I don't like the wordle bot telling me i had a bad guess and "coils" would have been better. plural words are never the solution, so in guessing this you exclude the possibility of getting it in two, which eliminates all the joy and fun!

A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."
