Obama: "The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy... Our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault. The President & current admin officials seem eager to escalate the situation while offering public explanations.. that appear to be directly contradicted by video evidence."
The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault. Federal law enforcement and immigration agents have a tough job. But Americans expect them to carry out their duties in a lawful, accountable way, and to work with, rather than against, state and local officials to ensure public safety. That's not what we're seeing in Minnesota. In fact, we're seeing the opposite. For weeks now, people across the country have been rightly outraged by the spectacle of masked ICE recruits and other federal agents acting with impunity and engaging in tactics that seem designed to intimidate, harass, provoke and endanger the residents of a major American city. These unprecedented tactics-which even the former top lawyer of the Department of Homeland Security in the first Trump administration has characterized as embarrassing, lawless and cruel-have now resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S citizens. And yet rather than trying to impose some semblance of discipline and accountability over the agents they've deployed, the President and current administration officials seem eager to escalate the situation, while offering public explanations for the shootings of Mr. Pretti and Renee Good that aren't informed by any serious investigation-and that appear to be directly contradicted by video evidence. This has to stop. I would h o p e that after this most recent tragedy, administration officials will reconsider their approach, and start finding ways to work constructively with Governor Walz and Mayor Frey as well as state and local police to avert more chaos and achieve legitimate law enforcement goals. In the meantime, every American should support and draw inspiration from the wave of peaceful protests in Minneapolis and other parts of the country.

Morgan Rogers double sinks Manchester United and keeps Aston Villa on leaders’ heels
There is simply no stopping this Aston Villa machine, cylinders pumping, exclusively handcrafted by Unai Emery, the manager who reacted to Morgan Rogers’s winning goal against Manchester United by launching his jacket into the night sky. “Birmingham, are you listening?” came the chorus from the home support but this was another victory with wider implications. For now Villa, third and three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, are firmly in the title race, two more brilliant Rogers goals earning a 10th straight win in all competitions and rendering Matheus Cunha’s well-taken equaliser nothing more than a consolation. A frustrating defeat for Ruben Amorim was compounded by his captain, Bruno Fernandes, being forced off through injury at half-time. Continue reading...

Q: You have differences when it comes to ICE agents in NYC. How do you reconcile them? TRUMP: We're gonna work them out. The mayor wants to have a safe New York. We're gonna work together.

I want to be clear: this is what American prisons are like. I spent years posting about the humanitarian crisis in U.S. prisons. The criminal legal system consigns Americans who are incarcerated to live like this FOR YEARS. DECADES.

This is huge. The Trump administration wants to vastly expand the practice of shipping people to random countries they have never been to before, and are now making this part of a threat; either the countries accept taking third country nationals, or they get banned from visas.

On a daily basis, I marvel at how many people in putative positions of power are willing to help obliterate American democracy. The US has faced a series of very easy moral tests in the past decade and it’s staggering how often people in once-respected positions have failed.

This is a clever idea but I prefer Leni Riefenstahl's 'glorious' edit of Hitler descending from the clouds over Nuremberg for the 1934 Nazi Party rally. Still, I think Goebbels would've been impressed by those shackles... (It might have given him some much needed sleep.) >s< s)

this is exactly it. i wrote something similar not long ago
In fairness to the incoming president, there is no reason to think that he has any of these precedents in his head. What he has, instead, is a deeply rooted sense that the world is a fundamentally zero-sum place and that American greatness means that others must be diminished. His zero-sum, social Darwinistic intuitions are echoes of an earlier age of reactionary aggression and shameless avarice. There is no such thing for Trump as a positive exchange or a mutually beneficial relationship. There is only winning and losing, the dominant and the dominated.
