Highly desired, by me, Red-headed Manakin was one of the last birds I added in #bahia for #birdsseenin2026. I felt I had missed all my chances to get one, but while hauling back north I checked #eBird for recent sightings, stopped at a random forest patch, and there it was! eBird is awesome!

Looking for a way to sharpen your mind? Bird-watchers may have found it.
Early in the morning, before the city wakes, Jane Patterson clocks in an hour or two on a slow, pause-filled walk through conservation land near her home in Ponchatoula. She waits for the sounds of birds in the area: red cardinals, house finches, prothonotary warblers. She crosses bridges made by Boy Scouts and minimally manicured trails riddled with active spiders, all in the hope of observing birds in their environment — eating, drinking, flying, hunting. Patterson, who started birding over 20 years ago, is one of an estimated 96 million people in the U.S. who engage in birding. She looks to the trees as a hobby after a career in IT, but researchers in Canada found that birding is much more than meets the eye. It could also impact brain health and cognitive decline in aging. Bird-watching is one of those skills that demands deep knowledge of species, along with their sounds and appearances. The greater the memory, the quicker the identification on the spot. Beyond obvious skills like learning to identify a house crow by its song or understand migration patterns of Louisiana’s neighborhood wildlife, it is also possible that bird-watching is rewiring brains. The bird-brain connection A study...

Formerly known as the Long-billed marsh wren, before the Short-billed marsh wren was renamed the Sedge wren, now this is just a plain old Marsh wren, but I found this one uncharacteristically not in a marsh but in a sedgy patch of weeds… oh, just forget it. #birdsseenin2026 #brooklyn

This Green-headed Tanager photo sort of goes with the Red-necked Tanager snap further down in my feed—you can see that bird in soft focus in the background. These mixed flocks of feeding jewels are always an incredible treat to encounter! #birdsseenin2026 #brazil #birding

I love the piercing, beady eye on this Grayish Mourner at Serra Bonita, #Camacã, #Bahia. It’s an unobtrusive bird of the mid-story to upper canopy, and if you see one you can be certain you are in high quality, comparatively well-preserved forest. #birdsseenin2026 #birding

Cool thing about grassland birding is that sometimes you silently stalk through the overgrowth, carefully approaching before bursting from cover to get your line of sight on what turns out to be a pinecone or a rock

For a few years, until fairly recently, this obscure flycatcher was known only as “Unnamed Elaenia sp.” Now it has what I can’t help but think of as a mildly insulting name. I present the “Small-headed Elaenia.” I guess that’s better than “Pin-headed,” but really?#birdsseenin2026 #brasil #birding

It seems to be the summer of the Sabine’s Gull on Long Island. I was lucky enough to see one off Montauk in June and then, astonishingly, saw this spectacular immature yesterday from a spectacular American Princess Hudson Canyon pelagic, (and it wasn’t even the most exciting bird we found!) #birding

Air quality guidance in the tristate right now is like “avoid unnecessary breathing.” I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but it really feels like the planet is trying to get us back for all the megatons of carbon we have been dumping into the atmosphere. #climatechange

If only this #bird were called “Sabine’s Kittiwake” then everything would make sense. It’s a small, intensely pelagic and very bouyant “gull” that shows a strong black hind collar in basic and immature plumages.

The tragedy here is that this closely approximates the standards now being used to support the rollout of many “exciting” new pharmaceutical products. It is grimly unsurprising that the current attack on science has no trouble finding disciples.

This just kept gnawing at me and gnawing at me, so I googled it. If you trust the goog as an information resource, the beach was indeed named more than two centuries ago for the abundant "beach plum," with the terminal "b" being appended mysteriously, and optionally, sometime in the 19th century.

Non-birders are constantly asking me stupid questions like "Okay, then, what's your favorite bird?" To which I reply "Don't be daft; no serious birder has one single favorite bird, all birds are AWESOME!" (But actually, obviously, it's Least Tern.) #birdsseenin2026

Although someone once told me it was named for the abundant Beach Plum, which grows there. So that’s confusing. I’m guessing that idea is straight up wrong however, and research might reveal some old dead white guy named Plumb.
