Gosh, Brazilian, Israeli and American elections, all within four weeks of each other! Where we’re all going to end up at by Christmas is anyone’s guess at this stage…

They would, of course, be very wrong. I’m not calling it that, even if I’m clamouring to get back in!

Probably one of the better pieces you might ever read amidst all the froth about AI taking away all human jobs (and, um, then destroying humanity)…

The key annual conference for my sector used to run at exactly the same time as the start of term for most of us parents. Now it’s moved, but to where many others have half term. Seems there was just no optimum time to have it, particularly when balanced against when work was at its busiest.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

But it will make us even more likely to vote for whoever is best placed to stop him, whatever the results. Which might be no way to run a democracy, but can only be better than losing one.

A suggested statement for Andy Burnham.
‘The British public decided in the 1930s that they would not tolerate black-shirted militias marching through their streets. They would cherish robust political argument; they would not accept thuggery and intimidation. When Oswald Mosley led his Blackshirts to Cable Street, local people turned them back. A new law – introduced by a Liberal, backed by Labour and carried by a Conservative majority – banned private militias, political uniforms and ‘the use or display of physical force in promoting any political object’. The British people are as determined today as in the 1930s that they will not accept the methods of Mussolini and the Munich Beer Hall. This government will uphold the law and defend the traditions of British democracy’.
