Bottom line: both sides show biases—but they differ in how well they can discriminate true conspiracies from false ones.

Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
Still, beyond these biases, people low in conspiracy mentality are better than those high in conspiracy mentality at distinguishing true from false conspiracies.
110
Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
More interestingly, we found that people low in conspiracy mentality have their own bias, this time toward under-detecting conspiracies.

Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
We found, unsurprisingly, that people high in conspiracy mentality (measured with three different scales) show a general bias toward over-detecting conspiracies.

Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
What we studied is people’s ability to distinguish true conspiracies (i.e., those established by epistemic authorities) from false ones.

Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
One common criticism of research on conspiracy mentality is that real conspiracies do exist. But of course they do!

Trump berates Zelensky, the leader of a democratic country courageously fighting Russian imperialism, while he allies himself with Putin, a dictator who started the bloodiest European war in 80 years. Sorry, President Trump. We believe in democracy, not authoritarianism.

Zelensky is a wartime leader watching his people suffer and die under Russian attacks every day. To be lectured and lied to by Trump and Vance, as they defend the war criminal dictator committing these atrocities, is unimaginable agony. An everlasting shame for America.

Nobody said it was a good thing to remove null results. I was just talking about “by definition”.
110
Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/02/2025
With this assomption you will have an effect with or without the null findings.

Dominique Muller @dommuller.bsky.social · 20/02/2025
I am surely stating the obvious but I am not sure about the "by definition". If there is truly nothing in the population, you will find no relationship even if you exclude the null findings (because positive and negative results will cancel each other out). Isn't it?

Journal fees for open access are becoming obscene. But what are we, scientists, paying for? I made a simple plot with journals in my research area(s). Clearly, we are paying for prestige: a shockingly clean correlation between the impact factor and journal fees
