We’re lucky to live in a time where HIV treatment means long, healthy lives. But late diagnosis can still impact your health. The fix? Test. It’s free, quick & confidential. Do it at least once a year for peace of mind. 👉 TOSD.shl.uk #WorldAIDSDay
Against a two tone green background read the words: Your parents never thought they'd see the day. With effective treatment, HIV can't be passed on. U=U.

It wasn't until the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000 that the age of consent for gay men was finally equalized to 16 - a crucial step towards legal equality, ensuring that all young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, were subject to the same legal standards and protections. 3/
Against a rainbow-coloured background, the second half of a GMFA press advert includes a list of facts around reducing the age of consent to 16. These include that evidence shows that gay men are able to protect themselves from the risk of HIV infection if they have access to frank information about homosexuality and safer sex in supportive environment.

The movement in the UK to reduce the age of consent for gay men to 16 was a significant campaign aimed at achieving equality between heterosexuals and homosexuals. Activists argued that the disparity in age of consent was discriminatory and perpetuated stigma against the LGBTQ+ community. 2/
Against a rainbow-coloured background is a close up of part of a 1994 press advert from Gay Men Fighting AIDS with the headline "GMFA SAYS PROTECT THE YOUNG". The advert notes that Parliament will vote on the age of consent within the next few weeks, and that MPs are still open to persuasion. It notes that some MPs believe that the age of consent of 18 or 21 will protect young gay men from HIV and AIDS, and implores that you can help to persuade your MP that this opinion is wrong, and explain why we need an equal age of consent for reasons of public health as well as personal happiness.

We're talking equity in this #LGBTQHistoryMonth dive into the archives with a look at this press ad published by Gay Men Fighting AIDS back in 1994 ~~The Age of Consent ~~ Read on for more and a closer look at the press ad: 1/ #equalrights #equity #LGBTQIA
Against a rainbow-coloured background, the words 'LGBTQ+ History Month: The Archives' can be seen. Above that sits a 1994 press advert from Gay Men Fighting AIDS with the headline "GMFA SAYS PROTECT THE YOUNG". Below this sits a list of facts around equity in the law around the age of consent, and the risks potentially posed to young gay men due to a lack of equality in the law, and information around sex and HIV.

Above the words "LGBT+ History Month: The Archives" sits a clipping from a newspaper that contains the image of a GMFA travel card holder with the words "London Lube - Make a pass" and a phallic version of the London Tube logo on one side, and the picture of buttocks and the caption "Squeeze it out" on the other side. Next to this sits a short article advertising the "TRAVELHARD" Travelcard holder. The clipping reads: Just what every piece of teen trouble needs, a sneaky old Travelcard holder to keep the condom, lube and safer sex reminders in. GMFA, out there on their own when it comes to brainwaves for spreading the word about keeping it safe, have developed this little gimmick which they'll be giving away on the Victoria Line, which is the line you'll need to get to Brockwell Park on Pride Day. Well, when the teens aren't getting the message in school, fun and funky tricks like this are lifesavers.

If you like tongue-in-cheek.... read on... In the 1990s, Gay Men Fighting AIDS played a pivotal role in HIV prevention & awareness within the community. The org was known for its innovative & bold approach to health promotion, often using explicit content to convey messages about safe sex. 1/
Text reading "LGBTQ+ History Month: The Archives" sits below the image of a travel card holder. The holder consists of puns around the London Transport System - "London Lube", with stations listed such as "Shagwell" "Holeburn" and "Campstead"

Another gem from the archives for LGBTQ+ History Month In the 1980s & 1990s, community orgs, lesbians, & others in #London played a crucial role in supporting people living with HIV or dying from AIDS. Spaces like London Lighthouse (who published this 1991 press ad) provided essential services. 1/
Snippets from a 1991 press ad from London Lighthouse, including artwork of two people on bikes, information on a sponsored cycle ride, and artwork of a lighthouse, next to text that reads 'Thank you to all lesbians & gay men who have supported the centre, and best wishes for Pride 91'

One of the earliest health promotion leaflets in #London that provided information about testing for HIV, the leaflet poses a question that might seem strange today: ‘To test or not to test?’
On the left is a red leaflet with white writing that reads 'The Terrence Higgins Trust - AIDS and HTLV III'. Beneath the header is a subtitle 'HTLV III: To test or not to test?'. To the right, against a rainbow background reads the title: LGBTQ+ History Month: The Archives'. Beneath this is text: The leaflet poses a question that might seem strange today: To test or not to test? But this was a valid question in 1986, when HIV was even more stigmatised than today.'
