Was the wall between business and editorial always rock-solid?

About five to seven years ago, that wall started getting a little more penetrable. There was a change in leadership, and my colleagues on the investigative unit and I noticed more of a rocky path to report some stories that involved stakeholders.

What was telling to me was that I had pitched numerous stories that would take a harder look at some of the gambling companies and addiction, and none of those stories was greenlit. They ended up doing a show on it around that time, but it became very neutered. Some of the people involved intended to make it much more hard-hitting and hold the gambling companies accountable. Let’s just say the final product didn’t end up doing that.

Fascinating tidbit in this interview with former Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), he says that Texas Republicans anti-transgender ads aren't "resonating." "What Republicans are talking about is just not what the swing voter is really interested in." www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...

DP: We’re still running transgender ads. It’s just not resonating. $100 million in ads, $125 million in ads, and nothing’s moved the needle here in Texas in a month in the Senate race. Let’s be honest. The 8 to 10 percent of voters in the middle who are going to decide this election, when they hear stuff about boys in girls’ sports, they don’t even know what you’re talking about. This never happened in their communities, and they’ve been hearing about it for so many years, and so many other people have been accused of it. What Republicans are talking about is just not what the swing voter is really interested in.

Funny story: After Maryland Rep. Andy Harris blocked marijuana legalization in DC, residents would call up his office to complain about potholes and stuff. When the staffer would explain that they weren't constituents, they'd yell something to the effect of, "Then stop fucking with our weed!"

same, i'm glad she's speaking out about it. i'm astonished to learn about it tbh but it's not like our evil pols aren't trying to do similar things here with charitable support so i probably shouldn't be.

Gamer hivemind, help: what's the best game that looks... like this? You know the kind. I'm seeking a specific nostalgic dopamine drip and clicking (not CSD's keybinds) and upgrading are musts. We're talking desktop ports of predatory mobile apps kind of territory.

the thing is, led zeppelin is a lord of the rings band, so when you have them playing over someone with a magic ring who ISN'T a hobbit, it feels a little uncanny.
