The only reason I am not "jogging" round the big sandy hole where the lake used to be is because rain is forecast. So I am now in the unusual situation where I'll be disappointed if it doesn't rain.

I’m using this stick as a measure for cutting the trunks of the trees I’m felling. In best ADHD fashion, I store it by dropping it wherever I make the last cut of the day. In a garden full of trees in various stages of dismantlation, this is proving suboptimal

My dream car as a child was an AC Cobra. I've had three: two pre-owned "Kit Cars" - the first with a Ford 4-pot, the second with a Rover V8 - and one custom built for me with a 5.3l Chevy engine that developed 450bhp.

The Monument House of the Bulgarian Communist Party, constructed in the 1970s to commemorate the formation of the Party. Is was allowed to lapse into ruin after the fall of communism, and the metal roof was looted. I urbexed it in late 2017 - just weeks later it was sealed off and restoration began.

The main hall of the Buzludzha Monument, the roof is destroyed and the hall is open tot he mountain elements.

Inside the saucer of the Buzludzha Monument, the huge windows are now smashed and from their empty concrete frames you can see the surrounding mountains.

In spring, I posted that if the water was low enough by autumn I would paddleboard round the island and take a photograph of the “underwater” part of the Goldsworthy. Ladies and gentlemen: the underwater part of the Goldsworthy. I came by bike.

Part of the conceit of Mur Spirale is that half of it is permanently hidden underwater. There is a part on land that mirrors this..
Right now, all of it is 10 m above water.

Today’s mission was to try and find a way to cycle to the island. Mission accomplished within five minutes of arriving at the lake. Typically, it’s impossible to e-foil under either of these bridges.

The first of the two bridges onto the Ile de Vassivière is the shallower passage and now is completely devoid of water.

The second bridge is deeper and I was surprised to find that there is a narrow strip of land that enabled me to Cycle to the island

But mainly If I like 'em, I buy 'em, wear them to death and fuck 'em off. I am currently sprucing-up some loved but worn pairs, and I came upon these... hadn't seen them in six years. Vans are known for their proprietary "Waffle" sole design. Some bright spark thought inverting it was an idea.

A pair of Vans I bought maybe 16 years ago. From above they look like a fairly traditional "Era" or Style 95 type design, the uppers are a mix of suede and leather.

The soles of the Vans are very unusual. In 50 years of buying these shoes, I have never seen another pair with this sole. It's in an inversion of their traditional "Waffle" sole. I think I never saw it again, because on smooth floors, it has almost no grip, and probably lead to accidents.

Some may know I am an enthusiastic buyer and wearer of Vans. Although I own around 60 pairs, I am not a collector. For me Vans was just the first company to embrace skateboarding. I think keeping shoes unworn in a box is a crime. OK, I do have two NIB pairs...

A very small section of my Vans shoe "collection"... they are not actually a collection, they are waiting to be worn.

Stunning hike today, but I was acutely aware that it was hard going. 40 minutes slower than last time cannot be attributed to me being 6 weeks older. There is something else afoot. Loved it all the same...

When I first moved to France, I was suffering from a chronic imaginary/mystery/psychosomatic condition. As I started to recover, my athletic performance improved. So I found myself in the unusual position of being faster at 59 than at 57. I’m over that hump now. Age is starting to take its toll.

The very long pin at the bottom was (unintendedly) fixing the fib to tib. That was agonisingly painful. So that came out very quickly. It later became clear I didn't have the articulation to skateboard, so they took the whole lot out.

In 1969, the original Marker MRs were the best you could hope for binding-wise. DIN setting had not been introduced. My first bindings were the 1979 Salomon S727 Equipe (orange not black). My second (and all time favourites) were the Marker MRR used by Franz Klammer and Ingemar Stenmark.

Market MR Bindings were the first with spring vertical release heels.

Salomon S727 bindings from 1979 introduced the form factor that was common for most bindings of the 80s and 90s.

You've really sent me down the rabbit hole. First full plastic boots with clips appeared in 1966. The black ones were the best you could get in 1969. I don't remember my first pair of boots, but the orange ones were my second. From 1982. Little has changed since then.

Lange Swingers, launched in 1968 were the best ski boots available at the time. Made from polyurethane when most other manufacturers were still using leather.

Lange XL-R ski boots, launched in 1982 lay down the blueprints used by almost every ski boot made since.

I really was a fall line skier. I could do the Hahnenkamm in a time that would not have placed last in the World Cup. So it was very unnerving being like Bambi on skis last year. I had a pair of 175 Rossignol for slalom racing. But last thing I ever did on the 210s was Mont Fort in Verbier.
