'Back the Way You Came' by Madeleine Armstrong
Before joining the A75, make a U-turn. Drive for two miles along Route 69, which seems fresher than you remember, then turn right at that grassy spot, where your grown sons are picnicking with their families. Carry straight on, past those dating site men who swore they wanted a mature woman, but flinched when they saw your pockmarked thighs. Take the sliproad onto the M50, ignoring your ex-husband, who’s trying to thumb a ride. Drive 15 miles, then turn off onto the A40. Suddenly you’re in a different car, not a beaten-up banger, but a dependable family vehicle that you wish you’d appreciated. There’s a younger version of you, hustling along the verge, dragging two kids with one hand and an elderly couple with the other, not even looking up to enjoy the flowers. Turn left into Middletown, a 30-zone. Your fuel gauge veers into the red – what haven’t you ticked off your checklist? The engine sputters, about to break down...but then you’re in another new car, a deep- throated sporty number. Take the second exit onto the M25, only it’s miraculously empty and you can go as fast as you like, barely noticing the young you dancing on the hard shoulder in a miniskirt and boots. You wish you could stay on this road forever, but you need to exit onto the A18. Your car becomes a bike, and you’re pedalling as fast as you can as traffic zooms past, people honking and shouting, so you peel off into a field, and you’re in that little pink Barbie car, your fifth birthday present, pushing along with your feet, towards your parents, who look so young, and you get closer and closer, until all you can see is the light that surrounds them.

'Love Bombing' by Madeleine Armstrong
On our first date you said you adored me, like we were in some period drama instead of Nando’s. On date two, you brought a dozen red roses, and no one had done that for me before. So I’ll admit I was impressed, even before you declared your true, everlasting love on date three. I thought you might be The One, despite it being too fast (my friend Kate said). I’d all but moved my stuff in when you started pulling away, slowly at first. You stopped listening to what I said, or maybe you simply didn’t care anymore. And I didn’t understand your sudden coldness, so I just clung on closer. That was a mistake, because it seemed to annoy you even more. It all came to a head at your friend Huey’s party. You were all over that girl Maya, the Shakira lookalike. I had absolutely no chance of competing with her. Your face when I asked you to leave. Like you’d accidentally stepped in dog shit. What the hell happened? you asked. You used to be confident. And I couldn’t remember. The old me. Before you. Alone.

'You’ll See' by Madeleine Armstrong
The tall man walks with such purpose that I can’t help but join him. Gaze forward, arms swinging. Past the shuttered pubs, their glamour blown away by the dawn. He kicks through takeaway boxes, barely breaking stride; I hurry to keep up. “Where are you going?” “You’ll see,” he smiles. “You’ll see!” I sing, swigging cider. Somerstown Bobby appears and falls in with us, his stinking jacket billowing. The tall man doesn’t seem to mind, but he doesn’t slow. He just continues towards the seafront, his long shadow keeping pace. A couple of students loitering outside a basement club call out as we pass. “Where are you gents off to?” “You’ll see!” I yell, and they follow too, their laughs echoing the seagulls’ shrieks. We round the corner onto the common, the distant sea mingling into the lightening sky. The tall man marches on. We pick up others as we go: a street sweeper looking for an excuse to lay down his brush; a couple of chambermaids from the Queens Hotel; a pack of lads playing football before school; a lollipop lady on the way to her shift. By the time we reach the promenade there’s a whole gang of us, laughing and whooping, following the tall man like a tsunami. We don’t know where we’re going but it hardly matters. We’re together in this mystery. He turns onto the pier and we gush behind him, our shoes rattling the wooden boards. We reach the railings at the end and he stretches his arms towards the sea, which glitters as the sun breaks over the horizon. For a moment, I’m disappointed, then I notice them. Hundreds of jellyfish floating beneath the surface, their translucent bodies catching the dawn light. We all stop. And look. And see. Really see.

'Because You’re Worth It' by Madeleine Armstrong
You’re mine. I send flowers to your desk, basking in the brightness of your smile as I watch through your office window. This evening I wait for you, ignoring belching bus fumes and busy people rushing by. They don’t notice me in the November gloom, and neither do you as I fall into step behind you, your heels click-clicking, hurrying off the main road and onto a quieter street. The stars are almost blinding when I grab you; I’d give them all to you if I could. You’re mine.
