"There is no joy or sense of accomplishment. No pride in making something clever or quickly, and all progress is associated with the AI and not with you. Everyone hates this. Most of devs my age are planning early retirement and are just waiting to be laid off."
Our dev speed has ~5x almost overnight

Quality has not gone down because we're all experienced devs and we're careful how we use AI and we don't let it make decisions regarding project structure or design patterns. However, I'm seeing less and less glaring mistakes made by the AI.

We're still reviewing generated code but I suspect not for long, the code is better than what most devs I know can write, at 20x the speed. The temptation to just push and move on is huge and irresistible.

There is no joy or sense of accomplishment. No pride in making something clever or quickly, and all progress is associated with the AI and not with you.

The market is dead. Nobody has money to spend. We're still working but leads have dropped off a cliff.

There is no going back. If we stop using AI we'll be out of business in a month.

There is no space for junior devs. I honestly don't know how to incorporate a junior into a team anymore (which is something I used to do for decades). Every time we tried they just become a meat proxy for AI while learning nothing, and getting in the way.

Everything regarding managing a team and a project has changed, and nobody knows how to do it anymore. I lost the ability to correctly estimate work required for a task, for example.

Everyone hates this. Most of devs my age are planning early retirement and are just waiting to be laid off.

People that use AI for coding don't learn anything. To understand code you have to write it, and nobody is writing it. Maybe understanding and reading code will become obsolete soon? I don't know.

Everyone I asked feel they are becoming dumber and losing their focus. I know I am.

We can also model this as a power function (square root for simplicity) that makes more optimistic assumptions. On this curve, you'd "only" need to order 251 nuggets to get 10 sauces, rather than 3135 with the logarithmic model. 🤓
A chart of sauce quantity versus nugget quantity, modelling the relationship as "sauces equals three fifths of the square root of nuggets"

The continuous and rounded versions of this formula are plotted, with the observed counts overlaid and matching with the rounded prediction.

My first introduction to Yayoi Kusama and her work was through the character styled in her honour from the webcomic Beret. I think it says something that even a fantastical, magical comic book version couldn't be more vibrant and iconic than the real person. Rest in Polkadot.
Panel from the monochrome comic Beret shows Royal Artist Council Yayoi: a woman with a curling bob in a polka-dot blouse and beret, saying "An *unspeakable* deficit of Polka Dots"Yayoi Kusama sits in front of a red-on-white polkadot backdrop, wearing a bright red ensemble that matches her hair, and holding a red-on-white polkadot bag.

Well, that's some consolation at least. I'll be watching how the unionization situation develops, rooting for the workers all the way.
Hi Douglas,

Thank you for your email and your support for free knowledge. I'm sorry that I misread your intentions and canceled the donation, please accept my apology for the confusion. I was hastily answering a donor inquiry, and was by no means speaking for the broader Foundation in any way.

Your #Wikipedia donations at work. The #WikimediaFoundation asks for your money to keep the lights on, & then spends it on notorious union-busting law firm Jones Day so its board members can recite generic anti-union rhetoric to justify ignoring supermajority support for unionization.

If you consider yourself pro-union and have donated to the WMF, you can contact donate@wikimedia.org to let them know you do not want your donor money being spent on their and Jones Day's union-busting.

HOW WE DISAPPEAR

I am in the store touching things.
Linen napkins, a blue bowl.
The world is on fire and I am choosing between two kinds of soap.

Everyone here is doing this, filling carts with small comforts while somewhere a child goes to bed hungry, while the earth heats, while men make decisions about who gets to live.

I know what this is, this careful arranging
while everything collapses.
This is how we survive.
And also how we disappear.

r/vibecoding 2h ago

ryan_almasu

The first 80% of vibe coding feels fast. The last 20% has been exhausting.

I really enjoy vibe coding. It helped me turn ideas into working software much faster than I could before.

But my biggest pain started after the app already looked finished.

Authentication was working, but then I had to think about authorization and whether every user could access only their own data. Checkout was working, but billing also needed webhooks, retries, duplicate-event protection, subscription states, refunds, and access control.

Then came database migrations, error handling, rate limits, security policies, tests, monitoring, deployment differences, and making sure one Al-generated change didn't quietly break something elsewhere.

The hardest part has been maintainability. As the codebase grows, the Al sometimes solves the immediate problem without understanding the wider architecture. A small feature can introduce duplicate logic, inconsistent patterns, or files that become difficult to reason about later.

At some point, it stops feeling like "describe the feature and ship it." You start managing context, boundaries, conventions, and all the boring systems that users never see but depend on.

I still think vibe coding is incredibly useful. I just underestimated how large the gap is between an app that works in a demo and one I would feel comfortable giving to real users.

For people who have taken a vibe-coded app beyond the prototype stage, how do you keep the codebase understandable and prevent each new feature from making it more fragile?

Sid Meier calls this his Covert Action Rule: "it's better to have one good game than two great games" Screenshots from en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwi...
The mistake I think I made in Covert Action is actually having two games in there kind of competing with each other. There was kind of an action game where you break into a building and do all sorts of picking up clues and things like that, and then there was the story which involved a plot where you had to figure out who the mastermind was and the different roles and what cities they were in, and it was a kind of an involved mystery-type plot.I think, individually, those each could have been good games. Together, they fought with each other. You would have this mystery that you were trying to solve, then you would be facing this action sequence, and you'd do this cool action thing, and you'd get on the building, and you'd say, "What was the mystery I was trying to solve?" Covert Action integrated a story and action poorly, because the action was actually too intense. In Pirates!, you would do a sword fight or a ship battle, and a minute or two later, you were kind of back on your way. In Covert Action, you'd spend ten minutes or so of real time in a mission, and by the time you got out of [the mission], you had no idea of what was going on in the world.

Here's one I just happened across while reading Katie Salen & Eric Zimmerman's Rules of Play: blob tag. Playing it in an empty mall would give a real "cryptid hunting you through the backrooms" kinda vibe. 😱
Unit 3: PLAY | Games as the Play of Simulation

The Blob begins innocently enough as a mere individual playing a game of tag. As soon as she catches someone, she joins hands with him. Now he's part of the Blob too, and they both set out, hand-in- hand, in search of victims. Everyone the Blob catches (only the outside hand on either end of the Blob can snatch at players) joins hands with it and becomes part of the lengthening protoplasmic chain. And thus the insidious Blob keeps growing.

Unlike your run-of-the-mill, mad scientist-created Blobs, this one is not content to merely ooze along, seeking its prey. It gallops around the field, cornering stray runners and forcing them to join up....

Moreover (horrors), the Blob can split itself into parts and, with its superior communal intelligence, organize raiding parties on the lone few who have managed to escape. The thrilling climax occurs when there's only one player left to put up a heroic last-ditch stand on behalf of humanity. But alas, there is no defense against the Blob and humanity succumbs. (If that seems unfair, well, that's the plot.)

The moral of our story could well be, "You become what you fear." If you have the heart to destroy humanity again, you can have the last person caught start the Blob for the next game.

Fun #GameDev StackExchange question this morning about generating random variables with a controllable degree of correlation, while still ensuring all potential pairs can occur: gamedev.stackexchange.com/q/217349/39518
A series of scatterplots of random variables a and b, each in the range 0 to 1.

The leftmost is labelled "Power = 1, Correlation = 0.0" and the points in the plot are uniformly distributed over the whole square area with only small random clumping.

Moving to the right, the Power and Correlation values increase, and the points in the plots are increasingly tightly clustered along the a = b diagonal, but outliers are still visible in all parts of the square plot areas.

Lots of good points here.
chee:

i really don't like getting a message from someone and realizing halfway through it's ai generated

mimi: There's something really saddening, like a small betrayal

chee:

it feels non-consensual. i trusted you, and because we were talking i was taking your words in - and then it hits me that they aren't your words. now i have these computer words in my private people placechee:

i think maybe it should be illegal for a computer to try to seem like a person

i was listening to an interview with someone falling in love with a chatbot, and it made me feel like the anthropomorphizing is downstream of the problem of computers pretending to be people at all

they don't have to be assistants, they don't have to talk in prose

when Natalia Talmina came in to talk about ai and conversation she mentioned that there's linguistics research that people adapt to each other's mental states when they are talking to each other

and maybe if you're adapting to the mental state of a machine that cannot think, that.. maybe that is badchee:
for me it's the "claude chose" and "claude decided"

and, like, i'm guilty of this myself. and i also say "the kettle doesn't wanna fuckin boil" but.. it's certainly different when the machine was designed to behave like a person and is sold as a person replacement
right?

it's different when it has the aesthetic of a conscious thing

we've learned over the past few decades to make deep meaningful connections with people entirely online, and these things emulate that very communication styleanother thing: the length of a piece of writing used to be something of a signal. it took at least as long to write those words as the length of it, and if it's good writing then way way longer

used to be if someone sent me 20 paragraphs of text it was almost certainly worth reading, because even if it was bad it would be interesting

because this mfer just wrote 20 paragraphs

but now if something's long i tune out in anticipation. and even aesthetics long associated with effort (careful formatting, —, ;, proper capitalization) also make me wary now

the LLMs are getting better and better at generating things that seem right at first blush, but have subtle mistakes the kind a person never makes
